An Original BT Tester 301A
« on: May 15, 2015, 10:20:29 PM »

Whilst in "mid-prowl" around the latest auction items, recently listed on eBay, I came across an original Tester 301A. Notice that it uses a CRT to display the trace . . .

Now I wonder what the Tester 301B looked like.  ;)

Haha ..... it was indeed the 301B I used, not the 301A. Well spotted.  :)

Not used that, or the 301C for donkeys years now. Upgraded to the HAWK and now the JDSU, of the lot ....... I personally preferred the HAWK's TDR function.  :)

I'm struggling a little to work out the physical layout of the meter - is the CRT bent through 90 degrees ALA Clive Sinclair's Pocket TV?

Regardless, it makes you realise how far we've come in the last couple of decades.

No. The CRT is perfectly linear. It is off-set at an angle to the top of the unit. If you take a look at the eBay listing you will see the instrument in its entirety and then all should become clear.

I agree with your comment about the technological advances. The Tester 301A had a CRT; the Tester 301C has a TFT display.

Ah yes, I hadn't looked at the original listing and it's photos.

There's something broadly historic about that particular shade of metallic green!

[As an aside, today while driving, I passed what resembled a Morris Traveller Van, in BT/GPO Yellow, immaculate condition, with a ladder on top and "GPO" on it's side.  On the rear was a Buzby advert sticker]
