Newbie TP-LINK TD-W9980 router advice?
« on: April 25, 2015, 11:47:50 PM »

I bought this router and I set it up with my ISP PlusNet ADSL.

Is there like custom unofficial firmware that gives better performance/reliability than the official firmware?

I have a PS4 so what are the best optimisation settings for this router? The settings are on default now and I have the latest official firmware.

My PS4 is saying I have NAT Type 2, what does this mean?

Also I cant seem to find any online opponents in the PS4 game Dead or Alive 5 Last Round a game that was only released 2 months ago. Why is that?

Many thanks,

There is a beta firmware version here, which may be beneficial if you are on a Huawei FTTC cabinet & which should help reduce latency.

As regards to the PS4 settings & its games, Im afraid I shall have to leave that to someone else to advise,  as Im not a gamer.

Ok how do I find out whether I am on a Huawei FTTC cabinet or not?

When do you think they will release the finished latest firmware?

. . . I set it up with my ISP PlusNet ADSL.

From your first line, quoted above, it seems that you are using an ADSL service. If that is the case, then equipment installed in cabinets is irrelevant.

So my question is: Do you have an ADSL(2(+)) or a VDSL2 service?  :-\

Yes it is ADSL2+

Ah, then cabinet equipment has no relevance to your circuit.

Ok thanks however what does NAT Type 2 mean? Is this causing my online gaming problem mentioned above?

I remember the PlusNet 2704n supplied router didn't give me this online gaming problem. Strangely when I switched to TP-LINK TD-W9980 router then I start noticing this problem. I don't have the PlusNet 2704n available anymore.

Any advice?

Yes I understand what NAT is now many thanks.

It says at the bottom of that link:

"Communication might be restricted depending on the security functions provided by your Router or Internet service provider"

Is PlusNet known to have problems with consoles when it comes to online gaming. I know that xbox had problems with talktalk when it came to online gaming.

Ok where do I go in my router to enter these ports?:

•TCP: 80, 443, 3478, 3479, 3480
•UDP: 3478, 3479

No, my ps3 and ps4 work fine. NAT type 2 doesn't mean it won't work.

Sorry cannot offer any advice.

UPnP appears to work for me, I have seen Skype show up in the UPNP page and PC GTA5 (Peer to peer apparently) online works a bunch better than it did on my old Home Hub though I assume I would still show up as Nat Type 2 on a console.

You haven't made things more complex by playing with the firewall and DMZ etc? Might be worth to try the most recent firmware from a few days back and do a factory reset.

I didn't have to do anything fancy to make UPnP work either.

Is your PS4 using wifi?
