It's actually a 3B - when he sent the first reply it was from his phone and the 3rd was the result of predictive text! :D

7:45 open curtains, parked outside is a Kellys van. :-\

Wander across the road to the cabinet where he's doing a test and wiring me up - I'm on port 1 (the only one)!

Go to his van to find the modem - he pulls out an ECI. I pull a face and try to explain to him the issues (he's Polish and his English isn't 100%). I have got these smaller ones he says, opens a new box and pulls out a HG612 3B - yay!

In to the house, plug things in - no sync. Check the phone - dead as a dodo - calling my number from mobile says engaged. Starting to believe all the worst about Kellys engineers. He goes back to the cab, 5 minutes later he's back, phone is working, 17070 option 2 is crystal clear, incoming calls are fine and the modem is in sync.

Connect up the router and we're flying! All done by about 8:20.

Well done. A good result!  :)

But what would have been the outcome if the end-user was Great Aunt Maud rather than jelv with "the knowledge"?  :(

The sooner that Openreach stop using Kelly Communications and M.J.Quinn the better. (Of course there will be a legacy "pig's ear" still to be sorted out as a result of those sub-contractors' "work" -- which should keep the likes of Black Sheep and his fellow members of the flock busy for quite some time.)

Yes B*CAT if you think about it only 0.5 percent of households all able to see their full stats on FTTC it could be even lower and the rest just don't know how or care, so if your in the 0.5% give yourself a big hug  ;D

>> I'm on port 1

YAYYYYYY  :yay:
Waits to see some stats, although from your location you should easily get full whack  :)

>> (the only one)!

Lots of time for crosstalk :(... but you should have lots of spare to play with so it shouldn't be a major concern.

>> opens a new box and pulls out a HG612 3B - yay!

You were lucky!

Not attempting to answer for Kitz but possibly because everyone has their own distinctive style?  :-\

Its a habit of old, back to the days before there was such things as quote tags and php forums.  Early forum software used it in place of quotes.
In fact some forum software until quite recently still used it and you could change the colour of the text depending on how many > you used to denote multiple quotes.
for example > would change the text to blue, >> text to purple >>> text to green
I think UB and a couple of the older regs will recall at least one example of such a forum.

I guess because I still do it, it gives away the fact that Ive been a nethead for @20yrs.  :-X
It's actually a fallback to the same system that email used too: - in that ">" denotes the senders message.

I tend to also use it a lot when on the ipad, because it takes just too long to highlight bits to c&p and try line up tags.

I forgot about usenet. Kicking myself now for not mentioning the newsgroups too.   :D

I dont use it now and havent done for about 5yrs.  My mail client is bad enough with email I dont think I could cope with the newgroups these days too.  Yeah I know there's other readers out there now, but old habits die hard

I use Thunderbird for mail and Usenet. The only add-on I have relating to usenet is Quote Collapse which is specifically for collapsing multiple lines beginning with > which it replaces with +. It also deals very well with nested quotes - as you know on Usenet it's not uncommon to see many, many > at the beginning of lines in long threads.
