HG612 versions
« on: April 09, 2015, 02:05:08 PM »

Tuesday I'm due to get FTTC - at this stage I don't know if I'll get an ECI or Huawei modem. Even if I get a Huawei I'm reluctant to start messing with it in case something goes wrong so I'm inclined to get a spare from the well known auction site. I've noticed that there seem to be different versions of the modem - does it matter which I get? (Locked or unlocked is irrelevant as that can soon be dealt with)

Yay!
You will enjoy it so much.
I have ver 3B and all works well, particularly if unlocked :)

As far as I know it makes no real diference.
(May be some debate re: better performance but your line is a greater decider on final performance.)

I've opted for the Plusnet 40/20, but I should sync at 80000 (they dug up the path outside my house to get the power for the cabinet). It's the latency which would be the issue if I'm given an ECI as I'm hoping to see an altogether snappier remote desktop performance.

Would I be right in presuming the version is on the label underneath?

The version appears in bold print on the modem's underside label, in the top right-hand corner.

I believe 3B is the latest version.

You are, indeed, correct.  :)

Avoid any that have no marking on the underside label or those marked 2V.

Both 3B and 2B will be acceptable.

I sent the vendor a question asking for the version - he replied: "It's 3rd"

Does that make any sense?

I presume it is a 3B.

Yes, 3A or 3B.

Have you seen (or had experience of) a 3A:-\  Because no such a beastie has ever been produced.

To the best of my knowledge (and also that of other persons) the full list of versions of the HG612 modem is:
  • null (The original, not marked in the top rh corner of the bottom label.)
  • 2V
  • 2B
  • 3B

I had a vague memory of reading about a HG612 3A & 3B.

Searched my history and found the following: (from http://community.talktalk.co.uk/t5/Unlimited-Broadband/FTTC-modem-differences-BT-TT-Sky/td-p/736391)

So sorry, if I was wrong.

I'm quite lazy. If it works, why mess with it?
Problem is, it's a case of when it 'breaks' rather than if and if you don't have a baseline from day one... :)

You have certainly remembered what you had previously seen.  :)  Unfortunately it was just a vague comment to a forum thread on an ISP's website.  :D

(No harm has been done but it goes to show how vague throwaway comments can, by inadvertent recycling, be elevated to the status of "facts". It is well known that this grumpy old kitteh is not enamoured with the Thinkbroadband forum which, although there are certainly some very knowledgeable contributors, does propagate rather large volumes of "hog-wash". However a black furry paw is always waved, in friendship, to those Thinkbroadband-ites who subsequently have arrived here.)

Been to the Thinkbroadband Forum and could not stand the crossfire.  ;D

I know the 'Interweb' if full of 'Facts' usually filter them quite well ..... I got caught this time.  :( ;D

I am sure this 'Factoid' has travelled as I am sure I saw it somewhere else but this was the 1st match I found going back in my history.
