VMG8924-B10 Powers supply
« on: March 19, 2015, 09:46:34 AM »

I'm looking for the details printed on the powers supply which comes with a ZyXel VMG8924-B10 router, can anyone with one of these routers please post the details.

I got the router from ebay and it's proved to be very unstable, many reboots and it's made a right mess of my dlm profile.

The router says it needs 12v at 2A, but the powers supply I received is only rated at 12v 1A and it looks identical to the one from a TG582n router. I'm assuming the power supply is the problem and would like to check these details before I go back to the seller.

I am using my 8924 at present but I just checked my 8324 (actually an F1000) and that comes with a 12V 1.5A PSU and certainly that gave me no issues.

I've just looked at my 8924 and it is 12 volts 2 amps.  I would think a 1 amp supply is the cause of your problems, I'm surprised it boots.

Check your PMs, sent you a message.

I dont have a VMG8924, but what I can confirm is that my VMG8324 is an official Zyxel and its power supply looks nothing like the DC 12V 1A PSU from the tg582n.
I cant check my own Power supply though as its plugged in...  but according to the Zyxel specs

VMG 8324 Power supply: 12 V DC 1.5 A
VMG 8924 Power supply: 12 V DC 2 A

Thanks for the replies. The seller has told me she has found the correct power supply and is posting it today.
Finger crossed.

Well the correct PSU arrived this morning and the router was up for about 3 hours before rebooting  >:(
The error in the log showed "Out of MDM shared memory need to reboot", same as with the previous PSU.
Interestingly the reboot was while I was using the GUI, IIRC previous reboots were always while using the GUI or telnet.

Running firmware (AAKL.7)C0 at present, previously tried AAKL6b4 with the same result. About to try AAKL6b.1

Hi

Sounds a similar to issue which I've been experiencing, although I haven't looked at the event logs as I didn't expect them to survive a reboot, and currently it's disconnected with the Billion back in place.

Interestingly, and this may cause me a problem with the return as they said they will test it and if no fault found a restocking fee is levied, is when it's not connected to the WAN and just has one Wi-Fi client, it's rock solid, and doesn't reboot, or at least I can't make it reboot no matter what I do in the Web interface.  It only seems to become unsteady when it's all plugged in actively in use (around 3 or 4 Wi-Fi clients although not all necessarily active as just mobiles or tablets sat idle, 3 PCs, one networked amplifier and a set-top box), which points to a memory issue, and presumably loading the Web GUI and making changes is enough to push it over the edge.

I'll give it a go again later to see if it falls over and what the error message is in the logs.

How many clients do you have connected?

Regards

Phil

I had reduced it down to two wireless clients, one of which was in sleep mode most of the time.

I've now installed 6b1 firmware, I also found the log file to be pretty large both system and security ( the contents had survived a factory reset ) so I've emptied those and stopped all logging.
2 hours up time and still no reboot, fingers crossed.

What "memory usage" does yours show, mine appears stuck on 58%.

Hi

Well I've tried putting it back on to see if I can catch a reboot event in the log.  It was all working fine until I connected it up to the WAN, then the Web GUI froze when I was adding the ISP login details and now it will no longer complete a boot sequence so guessing it is a corrupt configuration again.  I'm not going to factory reset it again as now at least the seller gets it back not working at all, apart from some lights on the front.

I still think mine must be faulty.

I did think the event log might be causing a problem so did clear mine and then stopped it logging altogether, however as the event log survives a power cycle it must be saved into flash memory, which I don't think would cause the run-time out of memory errors which I would think relates to RAM.

You can see the MDM memory situation via Telnet, just type meminfo and it's there, not much memory is shared.  My Billion has the same command and shows it has slightly less memory assigned as shared, and as that runs for months and never reboots, I assume the ZyXEL have a memory leak.

I did find another reference to this error on the Internet http://gathering.tweakers.net/forum/list_messages/1501722/84 and that was a ZyXEL as well, alas I can't confirm if my problems are logging the same error before a reboot.

Memory usage was about the same, however I don't think that is the same memory the MDM error refers to.

I haven't had any lockups so our faults may not be the same.

Thanks for the telnet command.

Looks to be plenty of free memory but not sure about "allocs" being greater then"free".

6 hour up and still going strong.  I'll give it a few days before going back to the latest firmware to see if that breaks things again.

I have the same MDM error and crash when on the GUI on L5, B1 and the latest firmware. I also have full local logging enabled - I didn't suspect that would cause an issue thought it would simply erase older log entries. I'll cut down the logging and see if it makes any improvement.

Well after clearing logs, and reducing the amount being locally logged it does definitely seem to make an improvement to stability. I am now going to move back to L7 and see what happens.

Hi

Thanks for the update.  I'd recommend feeding this back to ZyXEL support as of course the log should be self managing, it should clear itself if getting full.

I've been running a script (from a RPi) to monitor the "Shared Memory free" level.
Over a 10 hour period, with high usage of the routers GUI, it went from around 300KB progressively down to 38KB, it stuck there for a couple of hours before rebooting.
I also ran the script for a period where I didn't access the GUI. It started at 342KB and after 11 hours it still showed 338KB. Unfortunately by this time I was getting bad packet loss so had to manually reboot.

It's early days yet, but it looks like the memory issue it related to how much the routers GUI is accessed ( I was using Firefox).
Not sure about the packet loss issue, switching gateway didn't help so I suspect that was a router related issue too.

At present I'm waiting a reply from ZyXEL support, I'll report back if anything comes from that.

PS
I second PhilipD's recommendation of reporting this issue to ZyXEL support.
