Suggestions for UK registrars
« on: October 14, 2014, 12:45:14 PM »

Hi folks, not sure if this is the ideal section, but it seems most appropriate.
I'm looking for some advice for non-IT-literate friends and family who are thinking of registering their own personal (not for business) domains.
(My own requirements are more complex and I'm a techie so I have a bigger package from a specialist provider covering a number of domains)

All they will want, I think, is registration (with email forwarding) and possibly/probably later a more functional basic email service with a bit of storage that can handle POP and IMAP as they mainly use iPhones or the like.

There's loads of suppliers out there, but they will want a larger, reputable, easy to use and flexible service at a "fair" price - lowest cost is not really an issue.

I use 1&1 for registration, web hosting and email, and they meet my fairly simple needs quite well and inexpensively.

I looked at 1&1 but first reaction was that I didn't like their up-front headline discounted price with the real ongoing price quite well hidden.
123-reg seemed more "honest" in comparison. Plenty of others of course, they are just the first two I looked at.

Eric, can you say how your charges break down (roughly)?

I use 123-reg.co.uk for .co.uk domains, and domainsite.com for all others.

Years ago I seemed to go through several hosting companies (123-reg/easily/godaddy etc), each were discarded for one reason or the other.   Ive stuck with Vidahost for umm 7+ yrs now moving through their packages as the site grew.

They arent the cheapest, but when it comes to UK hosting they are very competitive and provide lots of things that some hosts dont unless you pay extra.

a co.uk domain with DNS management with url & email forwarding is £2.79 pa +vat

If they later want more features and webhosting, prices start from £29pa which even includes SQL databases and php, which a lot of hosts dont include until you pay much more £

Eric, can you say how your charges break down (roughly)?

I have a 1&1 Standard hosting package at £4.99 a month + VAT
and Instant Mail at £0.69 a month + VAT

Two domains (one .co.uk and one .me.uk) which are paid for every two years. £4.19 + VAT a year is the standard price, but I'm still in the first reduced-price 2-year period.

I left 123-reg about 18 months ago when they lost some of my emails. Their email forwarding had an incomprehensible virus checker setup, which wrongly detected some incoming mails as suspect and dropped them into a black hole.

Sorry, haven't logged in for a few days, belated comments...

I also have domains that just require registrar,  no hosting, as hosting is by google apps for mail and elsewhere for websites.

I used to use freeparking.   Very very easy to use, but only support is by web.  For more techie users, I have found their DNS controls lacking.  Plus, I almost had a domain expire once when they accepted payment but forgot to re-register, although it was quickly resolved once I reported it. Would have been nice to be able to phone them, though.

Prior to google apps I used freeparking's mail forwarding which worked OK and was easy to set up, though I sometimes had doubts about the occasional vanishing email.

I've now started switching to Vidahost.  Much  better DNS controls for techies but perhaps assume users more techie knowledge, compared to freeparking.  And of course proper UK phone support when crisis arises.     Haven't yet tried any forwarding or hosting.

I used to use 123-Reg but now I have transferred my domains to Ariotek who also provide my website hosting so it is all in one place. Ariotek are UK based and I have found they are very helpful and their support, on the rare occasions I needed it, excellent. They are not the cheapest for hosting but it does mean my website, domains and even my emails are all managed through one place.
