New Modem Wanted.
« on: October 12, 2014, 11:24:40 PM »

I am thinking of a replacement for my aging Netgear DG834GT and it looks like I may have to blow the dust from my wallet and buy one  :o :'(

I'm still on ADSL2 but hope soon to be on VDSL2  :fingers:

I seem to get good vibes about the 'Billion 8800NL' Is that the best one to buy gosh I used that word again   ;D

Edit...My set up BT line >DG834GT With NAT turned off > Smoothwall (hardware firewall ) Network switch > home network > 3 x access points for WiFi .

So maybe I just need a Modem ?

since you seem somewhat adverse to handing over money  :P, why not wait and see what's on offer from the ISP when you get vdsl2?

My netgear one is dying .
Edit... The last modem I bought was a dial up one  :)
One came with my first ADSL connection free and the other Netgear came of 'freecycle'  ;D.

Are they any good ?, I'm on a long 4Kl ADSL line at the moment and should be about 385M from the FTTC cab.

Can't really give any advice on long line ADSL but they work great on VDSL, and I believe its broadcom based so should do OK on long line adsl.

I think the HG612 is as good as any on a long ADSL line. The old 2-Wire 2700HG(V) was famously good on a long line, but of couse it doesn't have VDSL2 capability for when you upgrade.

Either a HG612 (two RJ45 ports) or a HG610 (four RJ45 ports) would be my suggestion.

As you will eventually be using a VDSL2 based service (NGA GEA, FFTC technology) the former would be the most sensible device to use.  :)

I added this on to my last post
I have a set of 8 Private IP Adresses can I configure this modem to use them ?. Does anyone know if I can configure the HG612 for static ip's once they have been hacked ?.

How come there is a lot of these on ebay ..But
The BT Openreach vDSL modem and Broadband Faceplate will remain the property of BT until otherwise notified.
So how can these people sell them ?.

8 Private IP Adresses

I don't think the modem has that much to configure; they just bridge the connection to the smoothwall.

Don't Know....some say on ebay they are moving home/upgraded to HH5/another router.

Sorry I can't be of more assistance....I used to use smoothwall (express) before I had ADSL but I can not remember if it can deal with the private IP's.

Found this manual
http://www.chatteris.biz/Manuals/EchoLife%20HG612%20FTTC%20VDSL%20NTE%20User%20Guide.pdf

So I think I should be ok with this modem.
