I dont know if its been explained already....but the reason behind jumping straight to 10 is because lots of software have to detect which version of windows your running before installing for obvious reasons.. as there is Windows 95, 98 and 98SE a lot of software coders set their programs to detect them as so: "IF WINDOWS =9x" meaning any version that starts with "9" then apply a ruleset which will probably be a non-install as your OS is "too old" - this has come from Win10 devs on Win forums

 - its also been suggested this gives them the opportunity to distance themselves further from "8" which was a massive failure...lol

makes sense

Massive failure it may be, but they've still withdrawn 7 from sale a good year before 10 is due for release.

Not exactly, only certain versions. Professional will continue to be available, not sure how long.

Since my wifes laptop is W8.1 and up to now I have not been able to convert her to Linux (  8)  ::) ) I guess the one thing I am interested about with W10 is 'does it get rid of all that metro stuff?' I know some folks like it but I hate it with a vengeance and I'm hoping that what I have heard earlier is that W10 has an option to not install it.

Stuart

thats easy just use the setting on 8.1 to boot straight to desktop and bypass metro  ;)

Correct, my wife's PC has 8.1 and she only sees Metro stuff when an "unfixed" file association dumps her into an unexpected app..... >:D

Hers happens to have Classic Shell on it as well, but I've worked on plenty that don't as with 8.1 it's not really needed for most users. A new desktop PC with 8.1 will go straight to the desktop, not sure about the defaults on laptops and tablets though.

I'll download Window 10 ISO and make a small partition on the windows 8.1 hard drive but it's already looking like Windows 10 is just another upgrade from Windows 8.1 so for me it's just another walk in the same park  :D

It's kinda different and kinda not. Maybe W8.3? Though more like Windows 93.......

I wouldn't install it unless you've got a separate system, or at least a swappable hard disk, to put it on.
I wouldn't risk it as a partition on a live system, what will happen when it expires?

I just delete the partition and use disk management to shrink the unused volume back into the healthy active primary partition and run a defrag  ;D

PS I have a dual boot system with 2 physical Hard Drives

It's just like Windows 8.1 though the metro interface is not so much in your face, running x64 version it's my first time running a 64 bit OS seems nippy and easy to use.

No issue getting it installed looks like i have a Tri boot system  :)

Your funny guys  ;D

If you are evaluating Windows 10 your will have noticed the Build has changed from 9841 to 9860 again its a long setup process 20 minutes and will keep your original setting after the update.

OK. A quick Google found how to check ahead of the automatic process. As this requires auto-waking the PC (which won't work on mine  :baby: ) I've kicked it off. Expecting Build 9879.
