Asus RT-N66U - 900Mbps Dual Band Wireless N Router instead of HG 635 Super Router.

Just asking for opinions and information at present, so anyone who has experience with VPN and more preferably with the ASUS RT-N66U router at the moment please chime in.

http://www.asus.com/uk/Networking/RTN66U/

I am going to start using a VPN service called hidemyass.

https://www.hidemyass.com/

In the first instance I will just setup VPN to use on my main PC and use the supplied software, but once sorted out, I am going to purchase another router such as ASUS RT-N66U to replace my HG635 SuperRouter (no VPN) and setup the  VPN protocol on it so that I can use 2 PCs, 1 Laptop, 2 mobile phones and 1 tablet, using one VPN tunnel out of the router. This I was advised yesterday by first hidemyass chat person is the best way to go because the software is only allowed on 2 pieces of hardware together.

However, when talking via chat with another hidemyass representative, he says I have to keep my  Talktalk HG635 router and plug the Asus RT-N66U into the original Talktalk HG635 Super Router router because the Asus RT-N66U cannot be the primary router with Talktalk.

Anybody have any comment on this?  I have just changed to FTTC and I used 3 different Netgear routers instead of the supplied talktalk routers over the years when using the normal broadband system.

Sounds like the second hidemyass chat representative was not correct.

I see the Asus RT-N66U does not have VDSL integrated, so I would need to use the one that was provided by Open Reach when FTTC was installed on 30 June 2014.

Failing that, I could purchase an equally good router for use with fibre with VPN that has VDSL modem integrated and 4 x1000Mbps LAN!  Anyone any suggestions?

Thanks

He is partially correct, what he perhaps should have said is "with your TalkTalk VDSL" because the Asus doesnt contain a vdsl modem.  His suggestion was essentially the same thing as using the Asus with the BToR supplied modem - ie making the HG635 the modem.

However.. the VPN issue still concerns me. There have been some issues with VPN using the BToR FTTC modems, and Im unsure as to what extent of using the HG635 will have by using it as a modem only mode will still have on VPN.
Which BToR modem do you have?  afaik it was only the Huawei ones that were affected but a fix has since been rolled out. https://aastatus.net/1854

I'm assuming you want a VPN service for privacy reasons, in which case hidemyass isn't a good choice, since they keep copious logs and freely hand them over when asked, see: http://torrentfreak.com/not-so-anonymous-vpn-uses-edward-snowden-for-pr-140101/

if you really want a private anonymous VPN, I suggest you read the following review page before choosing: https://torrentfreak.com/which-vpn-services-take-your-anonymity-seriously-2014-edition-140315/

Kitz thanks for replying.

Prior to OpenReach carrying out the installation at my premises (30th June 2014), TalkTalk sent me the HG635 Super Router.   I did not open the box (I was on holiday in the USA) and accordingly did not have time read the instructions.  When the engineer came he saw I had already fitted (some years ago) a ADSLNation XTE-2005 Professional Quality Master Filtered Faceplate and had routed the the ADSL cable to the 4th bedroom (study), where was I was already running TalkTalk ADSL 2+ on a Netgear DGND3700.

On seeing this he just went and fetched a VDSL  modem from his van:
Description NGA ECI-CPE-MODEMS TYPE 1B
ECI Model B-FOCuS V-2FUb/r Rev.B
ECI Cat No:ON316150
Manufactured 10/2013

He connected everything together and within a few minutes we were up and running.  Within a few hours I read the instructions and found the Huwaie HG 635 had its own integrated VDSL modem.  I just removed the Openreach VDSL  connected the  Huwaie HG 635 as per the instructions and it has been working fine bar a problem with the Vodafone SureSignal box that did not work anyway and I just had to open ports as instructed by Vodafone to get it working.

I presume this VDSL modem will be fine with the Asus RT-N66-U router if I were to purchase it?  This decision to purchase the ASUS is not set in stone and I would rather pay more money to purchase an excellent quality one with integrated VDSL and with VPN facilities and all the usual bells and whistles a geeky home user would need.  Although at 72 years young I am not a geek! Any suggestions so that I can have a good look and compare?  I would like one that gives good wireless performance.  That is the reason I chose the Asus.

loonylion.  Thanks also!

Thanks for your suggestion about the VPN provider.  Now I am confused....too much to read.  I want privacy but will not being doing anything clandestine.  Also I do a lot internet banking online for myself and wife and I am getting more paranoid about security.

I want plenty of bandwidth and the reason I had plumped for (not paid anything yet) hidemyass was because of the plethora of servers they had.  This plethora of servers meant flexibility....or does it?

Any suggestion on a provider? What do they mean by "open vpn"?  Level of encryption?

Just saw this ASUS....thoughts?

openvpn is a widely used open source encryption software used on the server. They likely mention it in the interests of transparency.
