A switch would work to expand eithernet ports, that's its purpose. However, port forwarding (on the router, used to allow certain incoming connections) would still only work for one device per port

Thanks for the reply Loonylion,

As each of my kids rooms has its own wired connection each to a port on the main router does that mean it would work with a switch?

yes it would. One of the router ports would be connected to one of the switch ports, then other devices can be plugged in to the switch and would behave as if they were connected directly to the router.

If you don't know what port forwarding is, then in all probability it won't be relevant to you.

That's great Loonylion,

I'll get some switches.

Thank you  :)

Hello,

See http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/965 for something similar...

How long did you leave both machines connected before testing access??

Be aware that it can sometimes take a couple of minutes for the routing tables to be updated when using linked routers.

Another thing to try enabling UPnP on the second router..

Can you post the configurations of both routers??

Thanks again Bodge99,

I set it up last night and my kids have been trying to play online today with no end of problems.

I've pulled it out and put it back to how it was and it's working fine now except no WiFi access point and we're back to swapping cables between the PC and the games console.

I'll try and post up the configuration tomorrow.
