IPV6
« on: May 26, 2014, 06:38:02 PM »

Does anyone know if IPV6 is going to get moving at last, or has it died a death at the moment ?  Reason I  ask, is that I was looking at routers today, and noticed that a Netgear router on display was supposed to be compatible with IPV6. I was wondering should I invest in a new router at this time, or should I wait until IPV6 actually happens. Also, what happens to my non-IPV6 equipment  ( like my IPV4 V.O.I.P. boxes etc. )  Will new routers provide a conversion function for the non-compatible equipment, or will I have to replace non-IPV6 equipment ?

AIUI the following allows you to use IPv4 equipment on IPv6 but I don't know if it applies to everything or just computers.

I wouldnt say it was a reason to rush out an buy a new router.
atm theres very few ISPs that use IPv6 and even when they do start using, there will be a cross-over period where both IPv4 and IPv6 is in use. The ISPs wont just suddenly abandon IPv4 without adequate warning, as it would leave far too many EUs unable to connect.

Thank you for the replies. By the seem of it then, by the time IPV6 is brought in,  even if my equipment here was not compatible with it, my equipment might require updating anyway, due to it's age !

IPv6 is moving more than most peepz realise.

IPv4 is now considered a prohibitor of progress mainly due to its limited number of IP addresses but whilst we transition from IPv4 to IPv6 as JGO mentioned there are mechanisms in place that allow both addressing schemes to co exists. These tunnels can either allow IPv6 to work over IPv4 or vice versa.

If your interested you can use a "looking glass" to view the internet2 routing table such as this one http://stryder.com/thanks/ipv6_routing-table_2009-lavanet_lg.pl.html or this one http://www.bgp4.as/looking-glasses
