Newbie HG612 & Sky Questions
« on: February 13, 2014, 04:35:30 PM »

Hi there,

Been lurking here for longer than I care to admit, but this is my first post! :)

My Sky Fibre Pro is activated next week and, as I didn't want to put up with the SR102 hub, today I've taken delivery of a pre-unlocked HG612 and a brand new Asus N66U.

I have 'wiresharked' the password from the Hub and flashed the requisite Merlin FW onto the router - so think I'm good to go. I have some probably very stupid questions though, that I wonder if someone could answer please?

Firstly do I need to alter any of the settings on the HG612 to get it to work with Sky Fibre or will it just connect once I'm switched over from ADSL to VDSL? The only thing I have done is disable QOS. I've left the rest as-is.

Secondly, I can access the HG612 directly from my PC by changing my NIC IP address to 192.168.1.100 and logging in to it via 192.168.1.1 as usual. When I try to connect the 612 to my existing ADSL router though, by taking a LAN cable from LAN2 to a spare LAN port on the router, I can no longer access the HG612. What am I doing wrong - or is this even possible? The address of my router is 192.168.0.1 and the DHCP range of the router is .2 to .254.

Lastly, when it comes to connection day I'm keen not to fall foul of DLM at the first hurdle. What would people suggest I do on the activation day; do I unplug my ADSL2 router and plug the OR modem and router combo straight away before I leave for work? Or do I unplug the ADSL2 router but wait till I get back from working all day 'till connecting the modem/router when the switchover will have been made? Also, I've read that the N66 may take up to 30 minutes to connect initially to Sky. This won't affect me DLM-wise will it?

Thanks so much for your help, apologies for the long and probably daft question-laden post, and thanks too for all of the knowledge I've accrued whilst I've been lurking :)

Hi,

There shouldn't be any configuration changes you need to make to the HG612 in order for it to work correctly with Sky Fibre.
It's probably worth checking in the HG612 GUI what version of unlocked firmware it has been supplied to you with. If it was from before October 2013 then there's a chance it's out of date, and that when you connect it the BT Agent software running on the HG612 will automatically update the firmware. The result of this will be that you'll still have telnet access, which is what the stats logging programs need, but you'll find the GUI is no longer accessible.

Take a look at this forum thread: http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php?topic=13130.0. I would recommend you put the bcm96368MVWG_fs_kernel_HG612V100R001C01B030SP06_unlockedgui-nobtagent firmware on it as that will give you the latest firmware, with the GUI included, but the BT Agent software removed/disabled. The relevant download links are included in the post. The firmware I've mentioned is in a folder called 'experimental'.

The default DHCP LAN range on the RT-N66U is 192.168.1.2 -> 254. You mention in your post that you're using 192.168.0.2 -> 254. If that is the case, then I'd recommend changing the HG612 IP address into the same range. Use your laptop to change the IP address of the HG612 to 192.168.0.253. From the GUI select Basic on the left hand-side and then select LAN. From there you can change the address. For completeness on the RT-N66U administration page goto LAN. Under the DHCP server tab change the range so that it ends 192.168.0.252.

If you RT-N66U is still using the default LAN address range of 192.168.1.2 -> 254, with its admin address being 192.168.1.1 then the HG612 will be conflicting because its default LAN address is also 192.168.1.1. Just use the same process as above to change the HG612 IP address to 192.168.1.253 and change the DHCP range on the RT-N66U to end in 192.168.1.252.

I would unplug your ADSL2 router in the morning, then plug the OR modem in when you return from work. In general you'd get the best sync rate if connecting around the middle of the day.

The connection of the RT-N66U to Sky won't cause any issues with DLM. You may not experience the 30/40 minute delay in your case as you've not previously used the SR102 modem/router.

Hope this helps you.

Hi & welcome

192.168.0.1 is that a netgear ?  If so might have to change the NAT settings ?

Thanks for your replies, very much appreciated.

The 612 has already had the BT Agent removed. The software and firmware details are :

Software version   V100R001C01B028SP10
Firmware version   A2pv6C035m.d22g

I will update it now using the version you've mentioned there, and change it's IP whilst I'm at it.

HighBeta - yes, the ADSL router I'm using at the moment is the Netgear DGN2000. Will only be switching to the ASUS once Fibre is up and running :)

That firmware looks fine ?

35M is the newer improved blob [by Csaba Sipos.] See chart below comparisons.

^Thx Micky ^

The netgear's nat settings will need changing to see the HG612 but the asus should see it no problem.

The default LAN network on the Asus is 192.168.1.2 -> 192.168.1.254, with its admin page on 192.168.1.1, which is the same as the default admin page of the HG612, so you'll need to change the HG612 IP address.

Thanks so much everyone for their help. All sorted now.

As suggested I changed the IP address and DHCP range on the Asus back to 192.168.1.1 etc - back to stock basically with the last DHCP address 192.168.1.253 - and the IP address of the HG612 to 192.168.1.254.

All working fine and dandy now :)

I should add that I've confirmed that BT Agent has been removed from the modem.

I'm not too fussed about sorting it with the Netgear router as, when Fibre goes live next week, I won't be using it again and have no need to connect to the fibre modem through it now anyway.

Thanks again for all the help and advice. You folks are the best.

Hiya,

Have already got my Sky User ID & Password (presume this doesn't change going from Sky Broadband to Sky Fibre), have got a HG612 Modem (unlocked), and my existing Asus RT-n66u Router (flashed with Merlin). Have got the SR102 working, but when I set-up the HG612 with the Asus (with User ID & Password loaded) I get Nothing, Nada, Diddy-squawt :-(

Asus is 192.168.2.1 & HG612 is 192.168.1.1

Both need to be in the same LAN. Its the last digit that needs to be different not the second last which is what you have.

As custard highlights on the subnets.

Maybe try 192.168.1.254 on the Asus & leave the HG612 on 192.168.1.1.
