HG612 3B VDSL Settings
« on: January 14, 2014, 03:48:51 PM »

Hello, I just purchased the above device from ebay and have installed bcm96368MVWG_fs_kernel_HG612V100R001C01B028SP10_no-btagent firmware. I am unsure what settings I should change for connecting this to the ethernet wan port of a netgear dgnd3700 with the pppoe username and password set on the netgear.

I am not with BT.

The existing VDSL settings on the router are multiplexing VC based VPI/VCI 0/38 transfer mode PTM? I have entered the 0/38.

On the ATM section I have EoA selected which I presume is PPPoE, VCMUX, service type no idea what this is but is set to UBR without PCR

PTM Defaults.

WAN are at the default, the broadband username and password is entered on the dgn router.

Also presumably it does both vdsl and vdsl2?

The device is synced at 34mbps down 1.5mbps up.

The netgear is not getting an ip from the isp.

Welcome to the Kitz forum.

Please tell us some further information --
  • With what type of xDSL connection do you intend to use the HG612? G.Dmt? ADLS2? ADSL2+? VDSL2?
  • Before attempting to use the HG612, what device was in use?
  • Who is your CP/ISP?
A VDSL2 connection (in the UK) does not use VC Mux or ATM but PTM and a tagged VLAN . . .

Thank you.

Its is VDSL upto 40mb service in the Isle of Man isp surecw. I am testing this modem at work before I have my line at home switched to vdsl.

At work there is no modem only the all in one device Netgear DGND3700 which has a modem built in for ADSL/VDSL. Normally the DSL port is connected directly to the phone socket.

The DGND3700 also has an ethernet wan port and can set to use either its dsl wan or ethernet wan. I have tried testing the hg612 by setting the dgnd3700 to use its ethernet port and then connecting the HG612 to that port in the traditional modem + router only setup.

Ah, things become a lot clearer. Thank you.  :)

So, as I understand it, you have a VDSL2 service at your place of work that makes use of the inbuilt VDSL2 modem of the DGND3700.

As I no nothing about your IoM ISP (or how its VDSL2 services are configured) nor the Netgear DGND3700, the best advice that I can give is to take note of the configuration settings of the DGND3700 (when it is in use as a combined modem/router device) and configure the HG612 accordingly.

I realise that is not much help and is, really, the obvious . . .  :(

Perhaps you would like to show us the configuration settings of the Netgear DGND3700, when its VDSL2 modem is used? That might provide sufficient inspiration as to the adjustments required for the HG612.

Could it be that the service is not VDSL2 but only VDSL up to 40mbps?

VDSL   is ITU G.993.1
VDSL2 is ITU G.993.2

Perhaps an examination of the configuration of the existing Netgear device will clarify matters. (I would be surprised if G.993.1 is being used.)

Looking at your screen-scrapes, I am not sure.  :-\

Both images clearly say N600 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit ADSL2+ Modem Router model DGND3700 and the parameters configured are definitely those for a G.Dmt, ADSL2 or ADSL2+ service.

It is only the attainable line rate (DS/US) that hints of a VDSL-type service.

I wonder if biohead's contribution to this thread might be of some assistance?

morning, I have managed to get the device connected to the internet in routed mode!:

The ATM section is the same.

So now just to figure out how to correctly bridge the connection to a router so it can handle the PPPoE. I am guessing it should just involve changing routed mode to bridged and bridge type "pppoe" or should it be "ip bridged".

I have brought my asus n66u in to see if I get any further with that this evening.

Did during lunch.

I reset it to factory defaults again and it did not work, however I have now got it working.

The magic setting was to fill out the atm section vpi vci to 0 38 with vcmux

Then under wan settings leave as ptm, bridged, either bridge type , transparent dhcp and clear out all of the vlan stuff. tfft and thank you.

Next q, is it necessary to have the firewall on, surely not applicable in bridge mode?

Also I got a speed bump with qos disabled.

I'm pleased to read that you have achieved success. :)

Clearly there is a significant difference between the provision of a VDSL2 service in the UK (the Openreach GEA product uses a tagged vlan) and the equivalent in the IoM.

With regard to the firewall, the "Standard" configuration stops access to the "innards" of the actual HG612 device from the Internet. Which is a VeryGoodThing;)  I'll suggest that you consider the existing firewall setting, then test its behaviour with -- say -- ShieldsUP! before totally removing it or customising your own firewall.
