If I put a 64 bit system on this new laptop for the wife and I need to copy all her 'Home' directory off a desktop machine , will that work or are the files saved on a 32 bit machine incompatible ?.

It's not a problem, the user's personal files are not associated with any particular OS architecture.

No it will be fine, I've done it on my test system. The only problem you could have is if she installed any software applications in her home directory which sometimes does happen, then they probably wont work unless they are Java or the like. Make sure though that the user and group numeric values are the same on both systems or you will have permission issues.
