iOS7 Waterproof Hoax
« on: September 24, 2013, 07:55:08 AM »

Oops!

In the news this morning

Quote
A fake Apple advert claiming the new iOS 7 software makes iPhones and iPads waterproof has apparently fooled some users into destroying their devices.

The "advert" circulating on social media sites claims that updating devices with the operating system installs a "smart switch" that cuts off the phone's power supply when water is detected.

This, it claims, "prevents any damage to your iPhone's delicate circuitry".

The advert looks remarkably similar to an authentic Apple advertisement, with the same plain white background and minimalist font and style.

It seems some users have been fooled into dunking their expensive gadgets into water to test out the promised feature, only to render their devices useless.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry, how can people be so gullible?

But if  the hoaxer thought that was going to happen and acted with malicious intent they should be felling jolly ashamed of themselves.   What an awful thing to do, if it was done on purpose.

Has anyone checked the date? Is it April the first?

Could the original report itself be a fabrication?

Or could the poster be genuine, and the whole story part of a complex conspiracy to discredit the phone manufacturer? :P

Not sure but most of the main media chans were carrying this news today.
It appears the rumour has been growing in intensity over the past week or so and spreading across social media sites as well as reddit and 4chan.

Whoever did the poster did a good job though, some nice graphic work there on the poster.
Possibly looks like it was supposed to be a joke like the last one that was circulated in that iphones could be charged by popping them in the microwave for a few seconds.   You can guess the outcome of that too.   ::) ::)

I don't think I'd have been taken in by that, and I doubt if most on here would either.

Which makes me wonder - is it because a lot of us have come through an age where technology promised more than it could actually offer, working to an extent but invariably leading to disappointment, bugs and failure. (I'd define this as late 70's/80's/early 90's - your opinion may differ).

Whereas now pretty much anything seems possible.  Incredible things can be done in software.

Which means there's a certain degree of plausibility to a software upgrade making a phone waterproof.

Except to us "world weary" techies?
