Bootup Problem
« on: September 20, 2013, 08:46:48 PM »

Hi
I need some help re booting up my Dell Dimension 2400 XP.
When starting up the bootup stops at the screen showing choices such as Safe Mode, Last Known Configuration etc.
Have tried booting from the Recovery Disk and also a bootable CD, having changed the BIOS startup sequence.   Stops at the same screen again.
Have used Dell diagnostic tool and this shows 2 faults re the IDE drive
1.   Error code 0F00:0244 IDE Disk S/N Y44ZFS3E Read Test MSG block 105122014: Uncorrectable data error or media is write protected.
Same for 0F00:1AFF
Also Verify test Code 0F00:1Aff - failed
I understand the initial bootup code is stored on a chip on the motherboard.   Could the fault lie here or on the hard drive disk  itself.
Would appreciate any suggestions.

I have virtually zero knowledge of systems that use BGW but looking at the error messages it seems, to me, that the disk drive is the underlying cause of the problem.  :(

Just because it won't boot, it doesn't mean your data is lost.
If there's something important on there the chances are that any IT techie can recover it for you.  8)

Unless, and this is quite rare, the whole disk is dead e.g. due to electronics failure or catastrophic physical damage.
