Your help needed please.
« on: August 02, 2013, 08:58:56 PM »

Hi, can I ask for some input from you guys who deal with Desktop PC's on a daily basis ??

My elderly Mum has given us her desktop PC to sell, I wouldn't have a clue at what price to pitch it at, but can tell you it is relatively unused, in excellent condition and is approx. 18 months old. The spec below is what is written on the items ......

Tower: Windows 7 (Home Prem) HP Pavillion Slimline. Model s5306UK
HP wired keyboard
Wireless HP mouse
HP 2010i Monitor

She also wants to throw in the following books ...........

Windows 7 Tips and techniques (Stuart Yarnold)
Microsoft Windows 7 simplified (Paul McFedries)
Windows 7 for the older generation (Jim Gatenby)

To finish up, she was also told to use recovery disks before she sells, so there are 3 HP recovery disks as well.

I'm not using this site to flog these items (although if anyone is interested ??  ;D), I would just like some help in pricing the products up, please. The more input the better, in order to gauge a reasonable asking price. Anybody care to make the first estimate ?? LOL. Cheers in anticipation.  :)

In theory it's worth very little, like most secondhand computer kit.

However, for the right buyer, you might get a couple of hundred quid.

You may ask why? Well, because it's Windows 7, relatively current, and Windows 8 is such a pig for some users.

Normally an out-of-date system with an old version of Windows would be worth peanuts.
But Windows 7 has a good reputation and will be supported for many years.

It is just a "finger in the air" and you'll need to promote its advantages.
As a consumer you can only buy Windows 8 these days.

I can think of a number of my customers who are "battling on" with XP on aging PC's who "missed the boat" with W7 and could be interested if they were in your area, which I guess they're not.
So I'm thinking, if they asked me, would I recommend they buy it at that price?

Looks to me like a dual core Intel processor with max 3gb memory and 640gb hdd. Not exactly cutting edge but not a slouch either. Probably would also run Linux very well - even faster than it would run Windows. If that spec is right and from what I've seen could take a quad core upgrade (its a 775 socket so a Yorkfield XEON would work) then a couple of hundred would make it a reasonable but with all those peripherals as well.

One of the things that struck me, if advertising then you would be wise to include these specs if possible, otherwise some people may just glance over 'HP Pavillion' not knowing what it contains.

To double check:-

Right click on the 'Computer' icon on the desk top, then select 'Properties'

or

Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > System

In my opinion a couple of hundred quid for a private sale may be over the top.

Browse websites which specialise in the sale of second hand desktops (eg http://microdream.co.uk) to get an idea about used prices. Unfortunately used desktops are worth peanuts these days (even with Windows 7).

I was talking for everything, not just the PC.

Thanks for the input, guys. I'll need to find the spec as Kitz says, and put that in the advert. Need to connect it all up first, and time is against me atm.  ??? Thanks again.

and put that in the advert.

Even if its not put in the advert, you can bet the first thing someone will ask when they phone up is what the specs are.

The things they will most likely want to know are:-

~ CPU (Processor)
~ RAM (Memory)
~ Hard Disk (Storage)

Some may also want to know the Graphics Card - ie if its any good for playing certain games/image/movie processing.

To find this info try

Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Device Manager.  Then "Display Adaptors"

or

Right Click desktop > Screen Resolution > Advanced Settings.  A new window should pop up with the adapter details.

IF you buy Windows 8 Pro you can use downgrade rights and install Window 7. Might be worth looking into?

Not applicable to the people I'm referring who will have consumer PC's with pre-installed Windows 8 standard (OEM).
