Sync question?
« on: December 16, 2007, 05:09:58 PM »

Hi,
Could someone please cast some light on this question please?
I have suffered a very bad problem since 6/10/07, which at one stage forced my sync connection down to 135k.
Now a change of router has had my sync speed increase, although i still suffer the odd loss of sync.
I've ordered a speedtouch 585 to furthur try and improve this.

My question is this, if I say sync at about 2 meg on 9db noise 41db attenuation, and this holds for many days, will the sync speed start increasing again?

I used to sync 5.5 meg upwards.

Kind regards

Certainly with an attenuation of 41 dB you ought to be getting 5 - 6 Mbps. Your low speed and occasional loss of sync suggests that there's still a problem, and a change of router is unlikely to make a big difference. Have a look through http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/lowSNR.htm and also check if there is any audible line noise (dial 17070 and select 'Quiet line test' from the menu).

Thank you for the reply, Please allow me to embelish my case history :-)
I have had a new drop wire fitted.
A adsl face plate fitted twice, current one with a RF3 filter fitted.
A D-side pair swop.
A E-side pair swop.
I'm plugged directly into BT main socket, and have no internal wiring.
I have been sent and tried 2 home hubs.
Currently using voyager 2091, and seen an improvement.
I have ordered a speedtouch 585 and await delivery. (supposed to be good?)
The last two visiting broadband engineers recommended a lift and shift,
Last engineer spoke to my isp and told him to request one.
I thought it would not sync higher till it had stabilised for a few days?
I have followed the helpful kitz tutorial, but think most of it is covered by the above bt engineer action :-)
I take it from your reply, regardless of my problems i should just sync upto around 6meg straight away?
Cheers again :-)

It certainly looks as though everything has been covered, and a lift and shift is the most likely solution. There isn't really a bedding-in period which would make the difference between what you're getting now and what you should be getting. The router will always sync at the best speed it can for the current line conditions and target noise margin (which appears to be 9 dB in your case).

Yes. A line will sync at its maximum negotiated speed regardless of the BRAS IP profile speed, which can take up to 3-5 days to update after a change in sync speed.

Like roseway says, you really should be getting more than 2Mb. If engineers have recommended a lift and shift then that really ought to happen. You may need to complain to BT wholesale if things don't move on soon for you.

Good luck :)

Thanks to you both for clearing that up for me.
I have just finished sending off an e-mail to the man who is resolving (trying too) my problem at bt retail.
I have asked for the engineers advice to be heeded, and a lift and shift requested from wholesale.
Thanks again.
