Ubuntu 12.10/Mint 14 Sluggish
« on: November 28, 2012, 10:11:31 AM »

I've been trying-out some of the most recent Ubuntu 12.10 derivatives,  Lubuntu 12.10 and Mint 14, both  based on Ubuntu 12.10, and with Linux kernel 3.4 (or thereabouts), and have found them all considerably more sluggish on my PCs than the previous 12.4 release. Slower to logon, slower to start key apps (evolution takes 5-8 secs, firefox 4-6 secs and others similarly delayed) and just a general poor response.  I tested them on 2 different PCs, and did more than one install of each - all similarly slow. I was planning to move from my Mint 12 Mate setup to Mint 14 Mate, but had to abandon that; instead I gave Mint 13 Mate (Linux kernel 3.2) a try, and it is fine - no slowness - so I've moved to that.

Has anyone else come across this overall slowness relating to Ubuntu 12.10, or even found its cause?

I also gave some Ubuntu 12.4 derived XFCEs (Xubuntu and Mint 13 XFCE) a try-out - very impressive re speed and control, and I was quite tempted (I still am!).
