No idea ?? The trainer who was fronting the course, mentioned that BT were one of four large corps asked, or chosen, to trial Win 8.

I'm a complete novice with OS's, but I can say that it is a  ???helluva lot quicker than the previous one. One reason being we receive the lappy with just the very basics on it. We then individually request the relevant software needed for our jobs. Previously, all lappy's had the full software for all engineering/planning loaded on it, most of which wasn't used and really slowed the thing down.

Also, any upgrades, of which there seem to be plenty on a weekly basis, can be done via 'Apps', rather than the old method of having to write new scripts and deliver them over (I've forgotten its name already ??) the slowest system known to man !!

All I know is, its quicker and we have 'Tiles' instead of 'Windows'.

It's definitely quicker, but probably (mostly) because the old ones had not enough RAM.  :-X

I downloaded the Windows 8 trial earlier in the year, and found that, on exactly the same hardware (I just swapped the hard disk out), Win8 64 bit was vastly smoother and felt faster than Win XP 32 bit.

I was quite staggered at how quick even Internet Explorer was!

Struggled to get used to the tiles etc though so switched back to XP  ;D

Might go for the discounted Win8 upgrade offer on the Microsoft site tho.

I've done that. £25 installed on a spare ex-XP HP Pavilion (Pentium D) system. Runs well enough, still think it's a complete mess though.
But it is my business and I need to understand it when my customers start buying it.  8)

Found this after enjoying Bald Eagle's link :

Quite a nice review of Windows 8.

Seems a mixed bag.  Some awful things.  Some nice things.

My prediction : an update will fix a lot of the idiocy of the new interface.  But how long to wait for it?

Makes me glad I have already moved to a real system --- Linux  ;)    Windows 8 looks a complete abomination and full of rubbish by default.

Is it just me or does tiles vaguely bring back memories of win 3.1 program manager?

>> Struggled to get used to the tiles etc though so switched back to XP

Ive not played with it properly yet so cant really comment...
... but Im currently going through the long process of trying to get my dad to get a more up to date PC - read laptop.
Im not relishing the prospect of teaching him a new o/s without the start menu. :'(

I know tiles is all about touch screens, but I think M$ missed a trick by not offering an alternative for all the traditional PC users.

I know nothing about Windows of course, but yesterday I was speaking to a friend who's just installed Windows 8, and he said that it has an application called 'Desktop' which displays a conventional desktop complete with a menu.

Not really.
The desktop Start menu sends you back to the tiles.  >:D

You can install a 3rd-party start menu though to retain your sanity - I have.
