Re-Validating A Genuine Copy of Win 7
« on: November 08, 2012, 08:01:25 PM »

I've had problems with my Dell laptop in that it developed a fault where it would take up to over 30 minutes for it to carry any action, including booting up. I've managed to rectify it (no idea how), but the screen now shows that I am using a copy of Win 7 that is not genuine. It is the one that was supplied with the laptop & was accepted as genuine before the fault.

Is there a way that I can restore it to being a registered genuine copy?

Thanks

I believe there is a diagnostic tool which helps you find out why windows validation failed.

Theres more information on the tool and help with the diagnostics at Microsoft.

If it was taking 30 minutes to do anything, including booting, I'd be concerned that the hard disk is failing.

Have a look in the event log, see if there are any entries for bad sectors in there.

If there's some corruption on the disk, that might be the cause of Windows is no longer thinking it's validated, providing nothing else has changed.

I'd give the disk a surface scan to detect bad clusters and see what's going on.

Go to Computer, Right click on the C: Drive, and choose Properties.

Click the Tools tab and click Check now under Error-checking and tick the scan for and ettempt recovery of bad sectors

It'll tell you it can't do it while the disk is in use, click to confirm you want to schedule a disk check, then reboot the computer.

It may take a while, especially if the disk does have some bad sectors on it.

When it's booted, you will be able to see the result in the event log.

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies. I have ended up doing a re-install of Windows after I had
managed to find a way of extricating my data & email files to an external drive
it's now running ok. Trouble is I've got the lovely job of re-installing my software etc.

Regards & thanks again
