Well what a week it's been... new H/D fitted to main PC and clean system install - the usual 8 hours of messing about as opposed to 30 minutes to install Linux... plus I've now found out how to upgrade the latter... very smooth and didn't even need a reboot.
The more I use Linux the more impressed I am... and it takes a lot to impress me these days.
