b*cat was busy perusing some Openreach videos (thanks for the link, Walter), when he realised that a few "screen-scrapes" might be interesting to fellow Kitizens.

So, attached below, are images of the three types of DSLAMs currently deployed by Openreach.

The Mini ECI DSLAM interests me. Does anyone know its version or type number, please?

The dslam looks like the MiniCAB 64V

Added, as an aside.  It would appear Italy has been using the ECI minicabs for several years... only the ADSL2+ version (MiniCAB 64A).

Gentlefolk,

I too listend to the super-energetic commentary, complete with a number of half truths !

As we can easily have a 24 hour power cut out in the sticks the suggested 6 hours won't go far.
I watched a commissioning engineer the other day on a new open ECI 128 showing 5 Amps @ 50 volts probably without the fans running so I'd guess they might need a Kw in the heat of summer.

I'd also question the usefulness of such a device for a small rural cluster as you'd have to duct in new fibre and power, down a very small tube.
OTOH if they have left the PSU and battery out of the picture, just providing a 50 Volt supply would be a possibility - IF you can afford to replace un-ducted twisted pairs with ducted fibre.

I wonder whether the accountants have caught up with their new FTTC energy bills yet - how many are installed now ?

I've trawled our NGA knowledge fonts, and I can't see this little baby mentioned anywhere. I think Walter is right in his assumptions of its usefulness in the real-world, regardless of Italy's indulgence for it.

The ones 'we' use are .........

ECI 128, ECI 256 (in the near future, the 256 will be fit as standard)

Huawei 96, Huawei 128 and Huawei 288.

You may B*Cat ....... but I can 100% assure you, in our official documentation we refer to them as 'Fonts'. So you now have a spare "U" for tomorrows 'Countdown'.

Wow, that's going to be a lot of fans for OR to keep in check and I'm sure the bean counters will be on the case (or cabinets). I suppose the temperature can be monitored remotely in case of fan failure?

I watched a FTTC commissioning engineer the other day testing the door alarms without the telemetry cable in place.
I therefore deduce that the alarms can be retrieved either via the DSLAM interface or via the POTS telemetry system.

RE power consumption I saw yesterday the some proud announcements were being made about installing 30,000 FTTCs by 2014.
Let's guess they have an average of half a Kw. Unless I'm wildly out that suggests only an additional 15 Megawatts p.a. on the behemoth's energy bill.

Something about "One of the worst mistakes humanity has made**" comes to mind !!!
