New ECI Modem B-FOCus V-2FUb/r Rev B

Latest modem I have seen.

   The back is differant having ventalation slots, and two of the feet are solid so it may not be possible to open it without case damage.

I've just taken delivery of one this morning, and the manufacture and warranty date match, don't know about the other info as it's in the car, and I can't be bothered to go and look at the moment . I'll have a look tonight when I get home, and it will be coming apart, one way or another  >:D

  If you are interested the power block is 12v DC rated at 1amp and matches the rating on the modem plate.  Yes I am sure it will come apart and one day when FTTC graces my part of town mine will be hacked to within an inch of its life :) 
 
  When fitting on on a wall I always advise the enduser to get some self adhesive cork  pads (Wilkingsons have them in packs of 20 for a couple of quid)   stick one on top of the other so you have four, five pads thick, and stick them on the bottom of the modem.
 
  Now you have a bigger gap at the back and this helps keep the thing cool.

Does the FUb/r run fairly hot then? As I have the FUb/I and it runs really cool - especially in comparison to my older HG612.

 No not really, it's just something I mention if the modem is in a position where a bigger gap and the modem sticking out a bit further, would not be a problem.   
   
  It all helps to keep it nice and cool, especially as it has vents at the back.

Yep, that is the one I have, only has two rubber feet, with screws underneath. The rest is clipped together, I've managed to get one clip apart on the side with the sockets, which has the screws, but the rest is proving a bit tighter.

I'll come back to it later, and I'll post some pictures when it's apart.

Edit. Two 2mm drill holes later and it's open. In the sides and back there are some vents that are blocked, behind these are small clips, I simply drilled a hole in the out casing on the side ones allowing me to press the clip in. Once the side clips were undone the it came open - will post some pics later.

 I wonder if there are two screws under the solid feet, it might be worth drilling down a little into one to see if it exposes a screw head.

Well, this appears to contain a different board to the one here

Opening instructions:

  • Remove the two rubber feet and take the two screws out
  • Now on the short sides, drill a 2mm hole 10mm down from the top face as per pictures below - ONLY drill through the first layer of plastic, not the clip
  • Now with a small implement push the clip inward through the hole, whilst levering the lid upwards with a spudger, do this for both sides
  • Now take your spudger and insert it in the top of the case on the sockets side, slide it along so your above the yellow LED on the LAN 1
  • Now you need to lever the case apart here to pop this clip off
  • Once you've released this side just fold the case open, it'll go tight and then pop open

Anyway, pictures as promised:

Now, where's those UART solder pads moved to, there's four solder pads to the bottom right of the square chip in the middle, could that be  them?

Ronski is right about the four solder pads to the bottom right of the square chip in the middle.  Pin 2 is TXD, 3 RXD & 4 GND (note TXD & RXD need to be crossed over).

However once your are in, the software seems to be quite a bit different to the previous model.
I haven't managed to undertake that much investigation so far, save discovering a very useful script for modifying some of the settings:- /usr/sbin/vg3503j_bt_xml_modify.sh

Running it on its own shows the existing settings.

Using it with parameters WAN_CFG_GROUP_T_00 lan_mgm_admin ENABLE, and rebooting, enables telnet access via the first LAN port via its configured IP address 192.168.168.168.

I have tried enabling management via the 2nd LAN port without success yet.

There also doesn't appear to be a working web server  :(

Thanks for the very useful info, I haven't researched yet but do we not need to connect the fourth pin?

Sounds like the newer ones have been hobbled, can we still get useful data out of it?

I've got my adapter, but need to spend my time sorting out my main PC which has decided to have problems.

I very much doubt it. I suspect it is Vcc (3.3 VDC) supplied by the PCB.  :-\

It would be sensible to check with a DVM.

I've soldered my pins in tonight, connected up my USB to UART adapter as per above, then installed Hyper Terminal and configured it as per picture here, I let Windows Update install drivers for the adapter.

This is what I got before I disconnected it.

My suggestion is to have Hyper Terminal active and open before you power up the modem. It would be interesting to see the entire sequence output from a cold boot.

@Phil, was that from one of the new ECI modems, the one with only two rubber feet?

It wouldn't allow me to open the connection until the modem was powered up, I've attached a txt file of the last 1 hour and 52 minutes output, as it was too much to post and exceeded the character limit.

Apart from opening the connection, I haven't entered anything into hyper terminal, the modems not connected to anything apart from the UART adapter.

And here's as close as I can get to cold boot, opening the connection as soon as the power is connected, I certainly don't seem to get any option to login.
