HG612 for ADSL on SKY...
« on: October 04, 2012, 03:00:43 PM »

I have successfully flashed the HG612 i got today , ive gone to set it up but theres wayyy more options than standard adsl routers ive used, i wondered if someone could assist me in setting it up?

its PPPoA - VPI-0 , VCI-31 , VC-MUX and I want DHCP enabled so I can hook up my sky hub to use its wifi - I can find these options but there are more that I dont know if i need to change or not.?

B*cat's wiki article may help, although it refers to configuring the HG612 for a BT-type or TalkTalk connection. One thing I can say - you need to use Path0. Path1 is for remote control of the router by the ISP (as I understand it).

I was having some problems where the username & password for dsl login would only appear if i choose 1.0.1 settings from drop down list then BACK to 0.38 settings then username & password would appear and sometimes other options, just didnt seem to be working right, tried different browsers and does it on both PC and LAPTOP, although since bringing it back upstairs to tweak on the PC it doesnt seem to be doing that now

I seem to recall that I experienced similar oddities, but in the end I concluded that following the instructions in the wiki article exactly, and in the order presented, did the job.

i did just that and now its working ;)

one thing i did do that may have done something was change the IP range from 1.1 to 0.1 - it shouldnt make any difference but I changed it back to 1.1 and changed the settings in advanced -> firewall - I think the PATH options may have had something to do with it

anyway.. all working now :) thanks for the link to wiki eric :)

its not syncing as high as I had hoped... :( , seems the BCM 6362/6361 does slightly better, its got 16.4Mb sync , my BCM 6361 sky hub manages 17Mb and BCM 6362 Sky router manages 16.8Mb , I was hoping it would get the same but its still way better than my Netgears @ 15.3Mb (BCM 6348) -15.6Mb (BCM 6358)- I should be able to push it too 19Mb with a 3db SNRM (currently 7db) - its wierd cos when I was with o2 I used to get 16.8Mb with 6db SNRM on my Netgear (BCM 6348)

does DMT Tool or any other SNR Tweaking apps work on it do you know Eric? or do I have to manually telnet into it? (if so is there a page on it as Im rusty on telnetting)

cheers

cant telnet HG612 - password issue
« Reply #6 on: October 04, 2012, 06:11:57 PM »

I cant telnet into the HG612, its enabled and it asks for username. I type admin and press enter, it asks for password but when I type anything the cmd prompt doesnt respond? if i press enter it just says incorrect then locks me out for 1 minute...

does anyone know why this is?

The telnet password is 'admin', even if you've changed the password in the GUI. Nothing is reflected back when you type the password. After you've logged in you should see the prompt 'ATP>'. Now type 'sh' <Enter> and you will be in the Busybox shell where you can type commands.

Most of the useful commands begin with 'xdslcmd', for example:

xdslcmd info --stats            (gives a full set of stats)
xdsl configure --snr N         (sets the SNR margin to a new value and triggers a resync)

More information here: http://wiki.kitz.co.uk/index.php?title=Broadcom_CLI   (just replace 'adsl' with 'xdslcmd' in the commands.)

thanks Eric  ;)  works a charm...

the only issue I have now is the error count seems to be quite high? its been live almost 4 hours and I have 843 CRC's... surely thats not normal on 7db noise margin, I never had that many when using my netgears....summit aint right, I bet its cos ive got the sky hub sitting on top of it... im gunna move it and reboot it

Please don't believe the HG612's GUI, snadge. It tells lies! (I must remember to document that within the wiki article.)

Bald_Eagle1 is the person to explain the extent of the GUI's deception -- assuming Mrs Eagle will allow him some play-time with his friends.  :P

ahh thanks for that B'Kat , I hope so - ive rebooted and its sync even lower down to 16.2Mb.... :(  I was hoping it would match my 6362/6361 routers but it seems too fall halfway between 6348/6358 chipset and the 6361/6262 for me

heres my max speed list for all my routers, starting with fastest first (MSAN is broadcom):

SPEEDS - ROUTER - CHIPSET

17.2Mb - Sky Hub SR101 - BCM 6361
16.9Mb - Huawei HG521 - Trend Chipset
16.8Mb - Sky Router 2504N - BCM 6362
16.4Mb - Huawei HG612 - BCM 6368
15.8Mb - Netgear DG834N - BCM 6358
15.3Mb - Netgear DG834GT - BCM 6348

its the fastest 'tweakable' router ive got...but 16.8Mb-17.2Mb would have been nicer

next I want a BCM 6361 chipset router...lol... I have a collection now.. 7 ADSL Routers and 1 Modem

1. Speedtouch 585v6
2. Speedtouch 780WL
3. Netgear DG834GT
4. Netgear DG834N
5. Sagemcom 2504N (sky router)
6. Sky SR-101 (sky hub)
7. Huawei HG521
8. Huawei HG612

bring em on hehe

That reads as if you are having fun!

A small point, the Huawei EchoLife HG612 Home Gateway (to give it its full title) is a modem/router. By applying the unlocked firmware (thanks Asbokid), you have freed it from its "locked down as a modem only" state -- which is how Beatie supply them.

yup! iam having fun hehe - slightly disapointed at the sync rate but so what, it was only £10 delivered!

can SNR tweaking be done with other chipsets? such as TREND or INFINEON (now Lantiq I believe) as I would venture to different chipset if so, seeing as that Trend chipset HG521 done so well with sync rate.

anyway I think next on the agenda is BT HH 3B if it gets unlocked (or other BCM6361 router thats not locked down), this is because its same chipset as my Sky Hub that gets 17.2Mb.

I tried to send a message to Asbokid to say thanks but it didnt work... :(

this router can operate in a 'bridged' mode cant it? even in ADSL? how does that work exactly? because this Sky-Hub has been designed to work with the FTTC HG612 modem, it has a special WANoE mode for the HG612 if you get FTTC with sky - Ive read something along the lines of in this mode the Sky-Hub does all the DHCP etc and manages/displays the connection settings...only the HG612 makes the actual sync and passes it off too the hub/router - wonder if I would be better off using it like that? what do you think B'Kat?

thanks :)

....turns out it WAS my Sky-Hub sitting on it that caused increase counters... since removing it the interface still reports funny numbers but telnet shows in 90 mins ive had 1 CRC and RS counters are spot on (hardly any corrected and uncorrected) 1 ES - so happy days! - gunna attempt a 4db Noise Margin now

EDIT: cant get xdsl configure --snr 50 to work..
/bin/sh: xdsl: not found

EDIT2: cos its xdslcmd configure --snr 50 ..doh!

anyway I got 18.4Mb with 3.5db...will monitor counters from now on :)
