Long Line: Separate Modem and Wireless Router
« on: August 29, 2012, 08:51:49 AM »

Hi,

I have done some research on this and looked through postings on Kitz. Of course the more information and views found, the more conflicting info.

In a nutshell I need

i) a modem which is good at working on a long line with high attenuation (Belkin modem reports 63db).
ii) a separate wireless router which is stable and doesn't drop wireless clients.

The line is a Plusnet provided line.

There are not really any other must have requirements such as 5ghz or gigabit ethernet although the latter could be an added benefit later down the track and the 5ghz seems to come with the better spec wireless routers.

The separate modem and wireless router are a must due to the need to position the modem near the master socket and the router elsewhere.

In my research the following modems seem to come up (in no particular order):

Modems:
i) Draytek Vigor 120
ii) Zyxel P-660 (with 4 port router)
iii) 2Wire 2700HGV - this seems to be the most consistently recommeded modem for long lines (but this includes router and wireless).

Wireless Routers:
i) Cisco Linksys E4200
ii) Netgear WNDR3800 Premium Edition
iii) Asus RT-N56U

Questions:
a) Are there any particular combinations of above modems and router products that would be particularly good based on experience and my requirements to accommodate a long line:
b) If the 2Wire is the most likely candidate - can I use this with a wireless router by using it only as the modem? How is this done? As it is an integrated modem / router / AP?

Thanks for reading / replying.

A link I found with instructions for using a second router as an access point is http://www.dslreports.com/faq/11233
I should think you will find somethere or a link to something.

Andy -- If you decide to try with a 2Wire device, be it a 2700HGV or 2701HGV-C, it can be configured with the wireless off, the DHCP server off and acting as a pure bridge. That is to say it can be used to provide the physical link between the ADSL Broadband and a Ethernet router, DHCP server, firewall, NAT, WAP, etc, device, thus purely acting as a modem.
