What's happened to the forum?
« on: August 28, 2006, 07:42:19 AM »

Has something gone funny with the forum, or is it just me? When I arrived this morning I had to log on, although my logon was supposed to be forever, and every section was showing as unread. The appearance has changed too.

I couldn't log on at 0330 this morning, so I assumed the minx was up & about doing something! I believe this is the new forum format wot I was priviledged to a sneak preview of a couple of weeks ago.

It's very nice Kitz, but I'm a bit worried about the kiss emoticon, I'm scared Roseway is going keep puckering up to me. The very thought of it's putting me off me breakfast; got to go...

Sorry guys I shoulda given you some warning, but it was one of those things that I decided for some obscure reason to start late at night when I thought it would be quiet, then ended up taking longer than expected when I ran into a snag during conversion of the existing forums.

By the time I got things working again I was falling asleep.

Theres still a few minor settings I need to change such as put more/different smilies in... and a couple more mods.
But at least the hard stuff has been done and I managed to get there in the end, after a few minor hiccups

Theres a lot more features in the SMF software..  and there were a couple of things that I found restrictive in the phpbb software after having used SMF on another forum.  If you have a look around the options (and once you get used to them).

Im also hoping the new forum will deter some of the spam bots Ive been getting of late (got sick of deleting them) since the phpbb captcha has been cracked.

A heads up of some of the preferances you may need to check.

I had a hiccup with the avs and resizing during conversion, but I think Ive managed to fix this for most of the avs that Ive checked so far.

Check that your forum time is correct, as it may need to be set to BST.

Modify Profile >> Look and Layout Preferences >> Time Offset.

Also whilst in there perhaps look at checking "return to topics after posting by default" and "show most recent PMs at the top"...  some of you may be interested in the "quick reply" option too.

From the PM Options, you may also want to set "save a copy of sent PMs by default" and show a popup when you recieve new pms..
Although Ive put a mod in that should flash in the top panel and display when you get a new pm.

I tried to upload an avatar but got this response: "The attachments upload directory is not writable. Your attachment or avatar cannot be saved."

The avatar upload works fine now, thanks (even though mine isn't as good-looking as yours :) )

I don't know, I go for a day out to California, then when I come back everything has changed!

Now is it my imagination or are we now running back-wards (newest post at the top)?
now let me see what these extra buttons doooo (oops) sorry.

In "Addition Options"
I see "Notify me of replies" is NOT set by default. Would this not be better set as a YES default ???

Kitz, what does the Message icon box do, I have tried selecting various option but nothing seems to do anything.

I changed everything just so I could confuse you OF ;)

>>> Now is it my imagination or are we now running back-wards (newest post at the top)?

ermmm nope...  shouldnt be...  have you changed something in your config?

>>  see "Notify me of replies" is NOT set by default

I think thats the same on most forums...  saves the server generating lots of unwanted mails.
You can change your prefs from
Modify profile >>
Notifications and email >>

Theres several options in there... change it to what you want. :)

>> what does the Message icon box do,

Which message icon OF..
ahhh after looking around for a while could it be the message icon when posting a reply?

If it is..  its the little icon at the top of the message reply..  it looks like you changed yours to a thumbs down...  and Ive just changed this one to a lightbulb.

you succeeded

Message icon: Found it. :-X

Earlier, on my main PC the posts were definately reversed, with the latest post at the top. I am now using my laptop and the posts are as normal, and no, I never changed anything in my profile etc.
Will go back and log on again on my other PC and see if it's still the same.

:-[Just remembered, I did change it in my settings, I thought it referred to the list of threads. ie, Whereas "Down the pub" is to-wards the bottom of the list, I thought if there had been a reply it would have been taken to the top of the list (obviously wrong "again")

But still a very good option that I think I may well use.
Sorry but I also forgot to mention "excelent work and thanks"
