Well there is only one sure-fire way to know exactly how it is wired . . . and that is to look.

If you would like my opinion and that of the other regulars, please take a sequence of photographs that clearly shows (1) the cables present behind each socket, (2) the colours of the wires from each cable and (3) the terminals to which each wire is connected.

Are you absolutely sure that there are just those two sockets connected to the line? Are there any junction boxes, either indoors or out? Are you fed by an aerial dropwire or an underground service feed cable?  :-\

Aerial dropwire. When the engineer came out he said he disconnected the other extension, whether he did I am unsure, there was never anything connected anyway.

Just took off the faceplates, he did what he said. The dropwire comes in goes through the blue/white pair to the new master then back again to the extension through the other.

Just checked again, the IP profile has gone up! That's the first time I've ever seen that happen. I think it's safe to say the fault is gone, I'm getting SNR of 6.4+ depending on the band.

That's good to know.

Back to 34meg, the variation is a bit concerning but I'm fairly sure it's out of my control, that's 21 below the estimate...

And now we are at 32, I think BT might be coming out again. Does anyone know their threshold for a "fault" below the estimate? Im estimated 55, that's 23mb above what I am getting.

I think Bald_Eagle1 could probably offer some advice.

It only took 11 months (working in conjunction with his ISP) for him to finally get the physical defects of his line remedied.  :-X

11 months!! I wish I had his patience!

I'm fortunate to have Virgin Media in my street... if BT don't fix my issue within a month, I will move to Virgin Media. The grass might not be greener on the other side but at least I won't have the headache of having to put up with copper lines which are well over 20 years old!

VM upgraded the area about a year or so ago.

EDIT: And just after I posted this, my line dropped! Joy of joys....
