So near, and yet So Far Away?
« on: August 26, 2006, 03:16:44 PM »

Thought I might have a break this bank holiday, so I have decided to go for a drive to "Hollywood" on Sunday and "California" on Monday!

What do you mean, I'll never make it?

Hollywood is only about 15 miles away.
And California is about 7 miles away.

Well they are both in the West Midlands  :D

What well know towns or city's do you live near too?

I can't match that, but without leaving Kent I can travel from Dunkirk to Leeds.

There are two places called Canada in England. Unfortunately haven't found anything more impressive yet.
I have yet to find anything local.

On a similar theme...

There used to be a funny town name generator.. in which you put the postcode of where you live and it gave you list of weird town names nearby.
Unfort I cant find the link now...

But I came across this.

I found something odd on the Ordnance Survey map once when I was planning a walk. Take a look, I dont really know what it is supposed to mean when you see "Totty Pot" is medieval type?

lol

Theres one town in the north west that can be thought of as to have rather a rude name.

Having been brought up around here I never ever thought anything about it.  The first time that it was brought to my attention was when some friends of mine from London were travelling up here and saw the name on a road sign and cracked up laughing.

Strange, I was halfway through typing this and just got "Transfered to ROXIO" and lost my text.

Kitz:
That depends on how you pronounce it. (better not use that smiley) says he tongue in cheek.

Falkirk, in Scotland is also pronounced by the locals in a very strange way, they substitute the "a" for "u" and drop the L.
