Who needs watercooling?
« on: November 12, 2007, 07:50:15 PM »

Our HP DL145 server is running rather cool tonight so it must be bloody cold outside. The server is a 1U full-depth server mounted vertically on the garage wall inside a wooden box. The box is sealed and has an air intake/outflow to the outside through the garage wall, assisted by an RVK-100 fan (uses 27W). I did this as the DL145 is rather noisy once the sys temp hits 30C and frankly its a total PITA in summer so I figured it could go whine to itself :D

This is the first winter I've had it mounted like this.

The attachment is a snapshot of part of the IPMI* interface. The processors are dual-core Opteron 275 so the server is quad-core effectively. The processors are running at 100% (all cores) and have been for 2 hours.

That's rather impressively low I think? I do hope the bloody thing doesn't freeze overnight when power saving kicks in :P

Oh the "SYS TEMP" is actually the temperature inside the power supply in case anyone is wondering :)

The processors went down to 9C overnight but it has warmed up here overnight :D

PSU (sys temp) stays at or just above 15C.

You would need ant-freeze in, if you had water cooling  ;)

Sweet

You will never get water vapor aswell because temps will always be just above ambient.

Sorry - only just noticed your reply  :-[

I would never get water condensing anyway due to the airflow through the box (remember its 1U so it's 19" wide and 1.75" high) as there are 10 CPU fans and 2 PSU fans. You only really need to be concerned about water condensing if there is minimal airflow in any given area.

One cpu has got to 6C so far this winter. I had to change the PEF* settings for cpu as it turned the box off because CPU1 was considered abnormally cold :D

*PEF = Platform Event Filtering. Basically the IPMI monitors sensors ranging from fans to temperatures to voltages and you can set your own filter such that (for example) if the temperature of the PSU goes above 35C then shut down the OS and then the machine. You can get it to send alerts prior to shutdown.

Nice!

My 2x Quad Core Xeon box is sat at about 35*c per core(Just a slight difference - James is jealous).

I am not doing anything on it at the mo as i have been tweaking the network so hosting is elsewhere. It will make a nice crysis dedicated server for the weekend  .

The downside of the 1U box is that it WILL shut down if the PSU temperature hits 40C. I'm assuming since this figure is set by HP and cannot be changed that it measures a fairly critical component/heatsink.

Anyway I don't care now as a 30W fan sorts it out - got to love RVK fans for running 24/7/forever cheaply :)
