As an aside do you all (regardless of age) find it easier to keep up with music these days? I have to say I don't - I get drowned in media now and frankly little of it now makes an impact on me. I suspect our kids deal better with it than me but I'm not sure.
I don't make huge efforts to keep up with modern stuff - Radio 2, despite its (IMO) fuddy-duddy image, plays enough from the likes of Kaiser Chiefs, Radiohead, Snow Patrol etc as they are released, I watch Kerrang! when I can at the weekends which keeps me up with the heavier rock, I get the occasional prod on Myspace from new/unsigned bands and if they list sensible artists as their influences I'll give them a listen and add them to my friends list, plus I am on various forums where music is a common topic (or game!) and have made some good (again IMO) discoveries I would otherwise have missed.
I know that someone will come along and say 'Steve Wright/Chris Evans' in response to 'fuddy-duddy'- but IMO they should both still be on Radio 1 with the kids (and besides, I like fuddy-duddy
)
Must admit, I can empathise more with the "turn that rubbish off, call that music" which was a common phrase when I was 14 8)
