Title: Best modem router vdsl With usb storage and media sharing That works with ipads
Post by: cypher007 on March 26, 2018, 03:55:27 PM
Ok getting brassed off with tplink over the vr900’s v1 lack of samba v3 support and constant connection issues when using my iPads.

Looking at getting a new modem router but in 3 years if anything they seem to be getting worse.

Are there any modem routers that just work with iPads can share files with windows 10 and tv’s using usb hard drive and not keep dropping connection, as the tplink 2800 seems to according to reviews.

Been looking at draytek.

While I've never contacted DrayTek support, if you're on an ECI DSLAM (VDSL2/FTTC) and your line is prone to getting errors then I'd recommend DrayTek. First of all it has a matching chipset vendor but second of all the chipset will apply a light amount of error correction on the downstream too (unlike Broadcom which doesn't). Obviously this has a drawback of a slightly lower downstream sync rate, but the benefit is generally a reduction in CRC errors/errored seconds and I've also found my latency/ping is usually 2ms lower compared to using a modem with a Broadcom chipset. Pretty sure the DrayTek 2762 should do what you want, I have the 2860 and I see options for file sharing.

There's also the Fritz!Box 7490 which I've had no issues with, pretty sure that has media sharing stuff.

If you've on a Huawei DSLAM however then I'd probably say go for something with a Broadcom chipset in (perhaps the ASUS DSL-AC88U although personally with their mishap and lack of 'support' on the DSL-AC68U I don't know if I can recommend it), especially as you're likely to benefit from G.INP which those on ECI may never see.

How do I find out my dslam chipset? I’m on talk talk max 80mbps. I’m syncing at 79999.

I do get some downstream errors but generally its rock solid.

My main issue with the vr900 is the lack of any new firmware to fix the samba issue, even though they updated the vr2600 I think it was to v3 in 2016. And this issue where our iPads when searching on google will sometimes get stuck for minutes with the network activity wheel going round.

Went on there chat and keep getting fobbed off and obvious there tech support haven’t got a clue.

I like the look of the 2862 as it has 5 gigabit ports but I’m a bit wary of getting it and finding no file sharing.

Also just when I think I’ve found a good router on amazon I start reading the reviews and people keeps saying stuff like crashes and constant disconnects.

Am I asking too much of a router modem? Should I use a separate modem router?

If you can't get it from the modem then look it up on
https://www.telecom-tariffs.co.uk/codelook.htm  provided you know your pcp number

also it's pretty obvious if you know what cab you are connected to. If it's a large double door unit then will be huawei. If it's a small single door then most likely ECI cab

Just found out the draytek doesn’t support ntfs. Bum.

I've just been playing with the USB slot on my Netgear D6220 and I can access it from my Windows PC, Roku, and Samsung TV without issue.
The manual claims it supports NTFS but I've not tried it.
I also can't comment on Apple devices as I don't own any, but apparently the share appears on  smb://readyshare.
The D6220 is Broadcom based and I'm very happy with its general performance.
 :)

The problem is after windows 10 1709 was released, I think, it removed smb v1 support.

I’ve just looked at the D7800 and that had lots of bad reviews also. So now looking at D7000.

Take care in that there are now two versions of the D7000 with completely different hardware. D7000v1 Broadcom, D7000v2 Lantiq.

Yes I’ve noticed what seems to be a shift by manufacturers to using the lantiq chipset. I’m guessing it’s cheaper?

Will the VMG8324/8924-B10A not do this?

I must admit I havent tried the USB storage as I have a NAS box attached to my 8324 via LAN.

There's more info though in the manual under section 13.
ftp://ftp.zyxel.com/VMG8324-B10A/user_guide/VMG8324-B10A_V1.00.pdf

Even though Im on an ECI cab, the BCM based chipsets work best on my line.

Is zyxel ok? I remember some of there old post office modems were bad.

Do they do anything newer with a good chipset?

Thanks for all the replies guys. Much appreciated.

Looked at my cab and it’s a 1.5 door, one large one small.

I've certainly had good experiences with my Zyxel 8924 (it's currently in a cupboard as the Netgear D6220 is in use).
There are plenty at good prices on eBay if you are patient.
If you're not fussed about 5Ghz WiFi then the 8324 is the same beast just less the ac WiFi card.
I've not played much with the USB on it, but it certainly should be able to do what you need.
As Kitz says it uses a good Broadcom chipset (BCM63168).

Your cab sounds like a Huawei ( :fingers:) - there are pictures at http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/fttc-cabinets.htm (http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/fttc-cabinets.htm)

I think you will find they are favoured by a lot of people on here.   Most of their VDSL modems contain decent BCM chipsets.
The B10-A versions contain the BCM 63168 chip which most rate best for performance..  plus they also have an additional inbuilt noise filter not found in other modems which gives them the edge when it comes to line performance.

Despite me having other modems, the VMG8324 is my modem of choice and I always go back to it.   I've recently picked up a VMG8924 which is the same but has dual band 802.11ac.

Different league. The AMG1302-T10A is an ADSL2 only modem which uses TrendChip chipset.

Zyxel VMG3925, but it can be hard to get hold of one which isn't locked to an ISP.
I have no personal experience of them, but theres a couple of threads on this forum about them.

Just been looking at billion 8900ax-2400.

I only use 2.4ghz to be honest.

Seems good if expensive £249 Amazon.

How much!! :o
I've never spent more than £25 on a router (second-hand of course). :-[

I've tested my Friztbox 3490 just out of curiosity, it can read both NTFS and Fat32, I used the same memory stick with lots of files and folders on it. Tried Fat32 then converted the stick to NTFS.
I can't test for use in any apple system as I don't own any.
This test was done under Windows10 1709 latest build

Thanks for testing. I like the idea of the fritz box stuff but I’ve read too many people having issues with them.

Could you write to an NTFS partition though?
Reading and writing are two different things.
eXFat may be a better format for compatibility.

I believe you can add smb v1 back to Windows 10 if you want. It's only turned off by default.

Yes I can write to the vr900 ntfs usb.

I know I can add support back in. It’s just annoying having to go back to google every time I install win 10 on a machine to find the fix.

This issue should be fixed by tplink to be honest. As it’s a security exploit.

Just looking at the 7590 and wondering. What worries me is the lack of suppliers in the UK. It’s hard enough to get decent support for known brands.

@Deathstar
I used a linux (Lubuntu 16.04) system to write to the stick formatted in NTFS.

Got a response from avm to my questions, not impressed:

thank you very much for your inquiry and interest in
AVM products.

Has the poor usb3 file transfer issue been fixed yet?

-> It's not a bug - it's a feature.

Can the gigabit wan port be configured as a standard gigabit lan port. As I don’t have use of wan port but would find an extra lan port useful.

-> In DSL mode, the WAN port is a LAN port. It is (currently) not displayed in the GUI.

What chipset does the modem part use?

-> The best ;)

We hope this response is useful and wish you much joy
with AVM FRITZ! products. Your comments and questions
are always welcome.

What sort of transfer speeds do you get?
