Title: DNS
Post by: Weaver on January 05, 2018, 11:35:56 PM
I have a load of Apple et al IPv6 boxes in my LAN and I'm wondering if I could set up a pi as a dns server so all the boxes’ various IPv6 and IPv4 addresses could be mapped to friendly dns names? However I've no idea what's involved.

My Firebrick router currently does proxy dns caching and it can add LAN-scope visible names too so I have got the Firebrick to assign some friendly names.  Currently this is only for IPv4 though as the boxes’ many IPv6 addresses are completely unpredictable anyway where they aren't mac-derived. Also I haven't got PTR lookup sorted out. I have also defined some FQDNs based on a real public domain name for the fixed IPv4s of some of the important boxes on the lan, and I've done this using a proper public DNS server that I use for my own domain so that it works everywhere regardless of where you are when you query, even outside the lan, rather than using the 'overlay' type behaviour that my Firebrick provides which gives only LAN-internal visibility for single-label names for example.

But none of this is automatic and the boxes are not 'registering themselves', I'm doing it by hand and having to keep it up to date. I think there is a way of sorting out ptr lookup at A & A (my ISP) but I'm not sure how to do it, but then that would presumably not be automatic until I can get something sorted out properly.

Basically I'm completely lost.
