Caoimhe my Siamese has taken to sitting on top one of my ZyXel WAPs, among the four aerials.
I have yet to attempt to measure her effect on performance.

I'd be more concerned about it overheating, thus shortening it's life.

Caoimhe can cope with being round the back of my wood burning stove, or having her face a few inches from the glass door, so I'm not too concerned about her. A small paperweight will end her fun, and a piece of fabric or paper next to it could suddenly become a bug attraction if rectangular.
What is it about marked rectangles? Can they be just markings? Mere rectangular borders, or does it have to be a marking of solid filled colour? Or a change of material, rectangular shaped?
A PhD on it? Now I would sign up for that happily.
I wonder if there is a serious academic book about cat behaviour and intelligence, also one concerning dogs?

There may well be others, but one that I've read and can recommend is Cat Sense by John Bradshaw (Penguin).
Apparently his previous book was In Defence of Dogs.

Cats like sitting on top of PC and modem thingies. One of mine always used to like sitting on top of my old TGs. Zac always used to sleep on top of the PC, Ziggy did for a while but he now has a cushion next to it on the desk so he can still lean up to it for warmth. It does restrict my choice of PC cases though :D

Mrs Weaver reminds me that in the old days when monitors where the size of Belgium, we had cats curled up on the top of them, nicely blocking all the heat egress. Iirc I did once have one contraption made of wood which was a sort of standoff platform that sat on top of aforesaid monitor to still allow heat to rise up and out through a big gap formed by sort of spacers while a cat still cooked happily above. That was for a 19" Gateway 2000 monitor that needed two people to pick it up. We had a vast CRT telly too that was so enormous that one cat couldn't block the entire top grill off. Now in the era of flat screens they will still do a death-defying leap onto the top and site there proudly, even though the top is only an inch or two thick.
Mrs Weaver tells me that Caoimhe actually sits on any ZyXel Wap that she can find. There is one downstairs that is high up, and she has to clamber onto the top of a bread-maker then jumps over a printer onto a high shelf and then sits on the WAP. But then any high spot is an achievement.
