I've got literally 2 drawers full of dvd's I own and because they aren't easily accessable I end up not watching most of them. If I could get them on my computer so I could watch them then that would be good. It would also give me the ability to stream them to the other tv's in the house.
I know DVD Ripping as been around for many years and as always walked a fine balance on the legal side of things.
But isn't there a good and easy way I can start ripping them? I'd be prepared to buy the software. I just want to be able to easily access my dvd collection.
Does anyone have any recommendations?

I'm the same, I just want to put DVDs and Blu Rays on my server, while the originals are kept at the back of a cupboard.
As I'm sure you know, the legal minefield really applies to the decryption, rather than the copying.
Worry is, the better rippers will often 'phone home' to their own website, to get decryption keys. That opens up a whole new avenue for getting caught, even though you are not doing anything that I would class as morally wrong.
Personally, these days, I just don't do it. :(

The means to decrypt has been 'baked' into every DVD player that left the factory. How would they work otherwise? It has long since been reverse engineered.

I used WinX DVD Ripper Platinum to backup some DVDs to MP4 successfully.
Please don't report me to the EPL ;)

I'm not an expert and don't want to be, but with CSS I believe the baked-in keys can be revoked if they are compromised. That would be another reason for the ripping software 'phoning home'. Or even just to check for updates.
And I did say "DVDs and Blu Rays". Blu Rays don't use CSS, they use AACS, quite different.

No, even if they have internet access, 'phoning home' as discussed in this thread, is not something you should be worrying about imho. :)

As far as I know, DVD players work even if they're not connected to the internet therefore it's "unlikely" they phone home ;)

I think I'll take the risk.
Wasn't the law changed and then changed back a few years ago when they said it was now legal to backup your purchased items? Then they changed it back (I think).
I have tried handbrake previously a few years ago. I didn't have much success. I think people recommend adding this other file that sits in one of the directories and its supposed to then break the dvd protection. But it didnt work for me. I'm willing to give it another go, and WinX DVD, which I was reading about yesterday.
I think the day they come after someone backing up their own dvd collection will be a massive own goal for them.

VLC Media player should give you the ability to rip dvd's, especially if use use it in most linux distro's with the restricted extras package.

You could try https://www.dvdvideosoft.com/products/dvd/Free-DVD-Video-Converter.htm - though it only works on unprotected DVD's I think

I've not ripped any DVD's for a quite awhile now but these are the MS Windows tools I use.
For Ripper/Decrypting DVDs I use SlySoft AnyDVD*.
Either StaxRip (https://github.com/stax76/staxrip) or MeGUI (https://sourceforge.net/projects/megui/) work well for the actual video encoding to your desired output format. StaxRip might be easier to get started with.
*Company shut down last year but the software devs relaunched the product as RedFox AnyDVD

I just wanted to add a follow up on this post in case anyone else wants a simple solution.
I ended up using Ronski's suggestion of http://www.makemkv.com (http://www.makemkv.com) for ripping the dvd's, and then MartinGoose's suggestion of https://handbrake.fr (https://handbrake.fr) to compress the files.
I have to say the makemkv program is the most simple to use and gets past protections. I then use handbrake to compress the file without losing quality.
I could have probably used more indepth tools but I'm a slow learner and tend to pick the simple route if I can lol.

There's nothing wrong with the simple route if it meets your needs. Some people overcomplicate things. :)

Ripbot264 is a bit of a steep learning curve, but it's big advantage is you can use multiple computers to transcode, IIRC it's either 10 or 16 computers it can use now. I can shrink a 30GB blu ray video file to less than 5GB H265 with no noticeable loss of quality (watched on 120" screen) in around 2hrs using just two PCs.

The makemkv gets my vote. This piece of software is easy to use.
