Title: It Was Fifty Years Ago, This Month . . .
Post by: burakkucat on May 01, 2017, 05:33:15 PM
. . . that an almost unknown band, Procol Harum (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Procol_Harum), released A Whiter Shade of Pale (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Whiter_Shade_of_Pale).

Since that time, I have searched (without success) for someone who could tell me the difference between a light and a heavy fandango!

i Think the difference is that in the light fandango you have to skip and do cartwheels across the floor. In other fandangos, you don't.

According to the beeb http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/6146618.stm
Quote
John Milton coined "the light fantastick" to describe dancing in 1632; the phrase became common coinage before being mangled, via the Spanish courtship waltz the fandango, into Procol Harum's "the light fandango"

What memories that brings back. That song still gets me, even now.

That song still gets me, even now.

Me, also.  :)

I can quote, without any difficulty, verses one & three and all of verse two with the exception of one line. In a few places, mention of a fourth verse has been made . . . and I have a very hazy recollection of part lines thereof.

i Think the difference is that in the light fandango you have to skip and do cartwheels across the floor. In other fandangos, you don't.

Whenever I have called out for another drink, no waiter has brought me a tray-full.

Thank you for the link with the reference to John Milton's "light fantastick".

On the single, released in May 1967, only verses one, three and the chorus were sung.

We skipped the light fandango
Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor
I was feeling kind of seasick
The crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
As the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
The waiter brought a tray.

[Chorus]
And so it was later,
As the miller told his tale,
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale.

She said "I'm home on shore leave"
Though in truth we were at sea
So I took her by the looking glass
And forced her to agree
Saying "You must be the mermaid
Who took Neptune for a ride"
She smiled at me so sadly
That my anger straightway died.

[Chorus]

She said "There is no reason
And the truth is plain to see"
But I wandered through my playing cards
And would not let her be
One of sixteen vestal virgins
Who were leaving for the coast
And although my eyes were open
They might just as well been closed.

[Chorus]

---------- Uncertain ----------

If music be the food of love
Then laughter is its queen
And likewise if behind is in front
Then dirt in truth is clean
My mouth by then like cardboard
Seemed to slip straight through my head
So we crash-dived straightway quickly
And attacked the ocean bed

[Chorus]

Lyrics, according to my ears, having listened to many versions over the last fifty years.  :)

I think Johann I can agree on that.

It used to be said that "Happiness is a cigar called Hamlet."
