Title: Quick question about the ZyXel VMG8924-B10A
Post by: Magicomania on March 27, 2017, 11:55:22 PM
I've noticed that some people have mentioned being locked out of the Telnet functions of the VMG8924. I could be misinterpreting what's been said but I am moving away from the Plusnet Hub One due to many of the functions being disabled and locked away. One of the functions being to change settings through Telnet which is important for some Games that I had trouble connecting with the likes of the Thompson modem routers which I was able to bypass due to Telnet.

So does the VMG8924 lock out Telnet or not? If so I might go with the VMG8324 instead if that has what I'm looking for.

I'm not aware of any such issues with the Zyxel VMG8924. The issue found with this device are some GUI menus being missing on ex-ISP devices. There are a number of ways to successfully restore these menus.

With all recent firmware versions the VMG8324/8924 only allow a single telnet access at any one time, so if you're using one of the monitoring programs and try to access it also by logging in to the telnet interface manually you'll probably get into difficulty. The rather old 6b1 firmware doesn't have this limitation, and works perfectly well for me.

My 8924 occasionally locks me out of telnet and I'm sure this is a bug in the f/w, it may exist in the earlier f/w as well but since more than one telnet is allowed concurrently it does not show up.

My ISP supplied 8924 did not have telnet enabled by default but it was easy enough to turn on via the GUI.
Note that the 8924 and 8324 are identical bar the addition of 5GHz wireless on the 8924.  They use the same firmware.
