Title: Norton extorting fees?
Post by: sevenlayermuddle on November 08, 2016, 10:15:19 AM
I am currently assisting some neighbours, in a rather odd situation.  It appears for all the world that they have been hit by one of the fake virus scams.   A remote helpdesk convinced them to facilitate remote access, then 'discovered' lots of nasties, then demanded several hundred pounds to remove them.

But the thing is... This was an outward call, to an 0800 number that they had been given that was supposed to be Norton.   I'm not saying at this stage what the number was or who gave them the number (not me!) but it was a source that would reasonably be trusted.

I'll be trying to get to the bottom of things and will probably start by talking to the real Norton but meanwhile, any inspiration or suggestions would be useful.

I'm assuming it certainly wasn't Norton on the other end of the line?

Have you googled the phone number to see what comes up?

In trying to find a real number, I got directed  to supply various details about the issue I wanted to discuss, whereupon a case would be opened and a number would be revealed that would let me discuss the case.

That sounds like they are using some schme involving generated numbers, a different number for each case?   If so, then a 'fake' number would be much less obvious and I can see why such a scam might be an obvious endeavour.  :o
