Title: A favour please
Post by: kitz on November 02, 2016, 03:19:52 PM
The ISP ratings (http://www.kitz.co.uk/isp/ISP_ratings.php) has had an update and clear out of old ISPs
The usual means of identifying IPs by using RIPE ASN system doesn't work as it should & as it picks up too many now defunct ISPs and certain ISPs just identifying as 'Broadband'  ::)

As requested I've reset what shows by default (only shows past 2 yrs ratings),  You can however still view the old ratings or request different time frames if you wish.   Because of the clear out ratings also look a little sparse.

I fully expect that there may be an odd IP block that I need to manually add.... so before I announce it on the main site would you guys care to be guinea pigs please and Rate your ISP (http://www.kitz.co.uk/isp/ISP_rate.php), and let me know of any teething problems.

Thanks

No problems here, but one small observation: it demands a rating for customer support, even though one may have no recent experience of support (as I haven't). Perhaps have the option to leave that part blank, meaning 'Don't know'?

No issues for me either.  :)

seems OK on Plusnet (the Origin option was noted)

OK for Zen.

A question... are these ratings, in response to this thread, going to remain as part of the system?

Done - but only rated on experience of being connected for less than 6 hours!

OK for BT. Agree with Eric regarding rating for CS.

Agree with licquorice and roseway: My ratings weren't accepted without entering one for CS, and I don't feel that I can in fairness, as I haven't had occasion to contact them for several years.

Would let me confirm entry without applying comment (for sky)

The process correctly identified my supplier as the TalkTalk Group and everything appears to have worked correctly.

A purely personal view is that ratings given, say, more than 3 years ago should fall out, automatically if possible.

Thanks guys for the feedback. :)

They should already do so.  Its 2 years by default.  Hence why the ratings now look so sparse compared to what they were.

However, you do have the options to view other periods by using the drop down box at the bottom of this page (http://www.kitz.co.uk/isp/ISP_ratings.php) and again under the bar graph once youve chosen an individual ISPs from here (http://www.kitz.co.uk/isp/ISP_rating.php).
You should notice the bar graph results will change as you change the period. (See screen cap).

All went OK for me, but the one on through put speed is a bit misleading (if that's the right word) considering we're rating the ISP. My speed is low (especially upload) given my distance from the cabinet, but this is not the ISP's fault. Perhaps congestion would be a better question, as that's much more likely to be down to the ISP.

How about I change it to

"Throughput Speed / Congestion *"

Hi kitz

I hope you don't mind, and it's just a thought, but how about having a separate stars for long lines or lines over a specific length

I realise this may prove non workable, as it would be reliant upon users knowing their approx length, so please disregard as needed

The other idea I thought, was to remove the particular rating, as it has the potential to skew results no matter what you do, or how you describe it

I'm sorry also, I thought the comment box was to show your type of connection and I did not realise you wanted the connection type, and provider listed in this thread, so apologies and I am BT business, 80/20, multi IP with line length of 25 steps (bet you've never heard the distance described that way, sorry, but 25 steps,  I have never bothered to run a distance check to cab)

I will check tommorow from a client on LOS, through a talk talk backhaul and post if this is alright

Many thanks

John

Thanks Ron.   I tried to cover it with
I see exactly what you mean by using the word congestion, but my thoughts there are that the average man in the street wouldnt know what that meant.

How about I change it to

"Throughput Speed / Congestion *"

I guess the average man in the street wouldn't be subscribing to the forum in any case.

A bit long winded, but what about " Download speed compared to sync speed"

I was wondering about "Speed consistency" with an explanation about experiencing speeds below normal and/or predicted?

Left my rating and a comment, no errors happened.  But I noticed when writing the comment it said its useful for others to view, however I find no way to view other people's comments.

. . . however I find no way to view other people's comments.

Hmm?  :-\  I see the following under the Sky ratings --

Quote
Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro - no longer sold   02-11-16 22:27

-- and that looks like your entry, Chrys.

Yes, that is doable -  simple html change - and something I feel could be understood by man in the street and makes sense to the forumites :)

seems a fair few trash ratings from some people with 1 stars for everything and a vague "isp sucks" comment.

Good fun, one observation though, I could only rate one of my ISP's, I did PLusNet - perfectly understandable as only weirdos's have two ISP's.

But ..... we are the weirdo's

Or some of us anyway, would like to rate Zen as well, if I had the chance.

Hi chunkes

We have same issue but it's not an issue as such, as I said I would try from a client who has 3 different ISP

I have not time right now, but I think you need to clear your browser cache, including cookies perhaps, and also ensure all web traffic goes out on the zen IP, then you should be able to rate zen

Many thanks

John

Thank you. :)

TBH, Im not too bothered about comments, & the connection type was just a suggestion for if someone didn't have anything else to say so don't worry about it :)

Thanks for your feedback guys.   Since all appears to be working ok, Im going to publish it live on the main site.

If anyone wants their 'test' result deleting, so they can re-vote,  let me know.
