Title: Searching through your own previous posts?
Post by: Weaver on October 13, 2016, 08:32:52 AM
Is there a way to search through your own previous posts? Or even to search by user=x?

Use the search button.
Then theres a box  "By User".   Enter the users name.   Theres other options you can set to help find a specific post you are looking for.

An alternative method is to go to the user profile by clicking on their name.  Click "Show posts" from the LH menu and it will display all their posts.  Note this method only shows posts and doesnt allow a search on a key word like the first method does, but its handy to check for say a post you made last week.

Note that if looking for one of your own posts and you know which board(s) you are likely to have put it on the advanced search also allows you to select the boards to search.

Brilliant, I simply couldn't see that, my eyesight is shot these days. Thanks.

I had resorted to using google "site:forum.kitz.co.uk +weaver xxx" as I couldn't remember the advanced search feature.

My own lazy method, which avoids typing in my name, is to simply click on my username in any post in any thread, which takes me to my profile.

I then click 'show posts' within 'profile info', which displays my own posts across all areas of the forum, ordered from newest to oldest, which is usually what I want.

Same works for other usernames too. :)

Ps: just reallised I have exactly repeated something Kitz already said.   Maybe time to increase my medication?  :-[

Google dropped the plus sign prefix for exact matching in 2011. You need to use double quotes now.

site:forum.kitz.co.uk "weaver" xxx

I had thought that the plus sign was for "required"? Must have got that into my head wrong.

That used to be the case iirc, and very useful it was too.

But it hasn't worked for several years, probably since about the time Google stopped 'not being evil'. :(

Drifting off topic:

Is there a decent concise guide to google's query syntax anywhere?

Or even better, a tool that will handle more complex queries and pass them through to google (I used to have an app a bit like this many many years ago).
