Ah, you beat me to it.  >:D

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/

I just came across a conversation on another forum talking about this web-site and there was/is only good comments and reports of it.

Just as a point of interest, it seems that the "Giveaway" programs are all FULL programs unless tagged as "Demo" in it's title bar. (possibly when installed "I don't know")

The main debate is whether you would be able to store the program for latter use or have to install before the giveaway expiry date and time, there are mixed views on this.

Floydoid:
Any chance of you altering your topic heading to say something like:

Free Giveaway of the Day Software

At least that way if people are not particularly interested "Data Recovery Software" they may be more inclined not to skip past your initial post.

Done it OF... I think a lot of the stuff that's given away is the latest beta versions, so the developers can check all the comments from those who've tried it... I tend to wait till late afternoon or evening to see what the general feedback is like before I try anything.
Title: Re: Free Giveaway of the Day Software
Post by: oldfogy on April 13, 2008, 04:56:01 PM
Mmm, I never thought about it being Beta ware, which I try and avoid if possible.

**************

Some software I am interesting to locate is for CCTV recording, which will also display the date and time.
Free preferably, or maybe a torrent .

I think I read in another thread that Soms did some CCTV recordings so maybe he will drop in here, or start another thread in the "Software" section with programs that can be recommend.

Most CCTV s/w really depends on what you are using for capture and it simply won't work on other hardware. That is is you're talking about multi-camera setups.

In my experience you'll struggle to find CCTV s/w which doesn't datestamp the video.

I don't want to hijack or take this thread off course, so I will start a new thread.

The only problem is, you have to install the software from there on the day it is given away.  For example I had Aimersoft DVD ripper from there, which was excellent, but then my hard drive gave up the ghost, and I haven't seen it on there since - I try to remember to visit every day.  Of course I've not found a suitable Freeware ripper either... unless anyone knows different of course.

Maybe one day I'll bite the bullet and pay the $35 for it.

Which ripper are you looking for, Audio, Video or Zip/RAR etc?

Something that will rip VOB files to AVI or WMV.

The main program I use is called "AutoGK" (Auto GordianKnot)

Main site http://www.autogk.me.uk
DL v2.45 stable http://www.autogk.me.uk/index.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=1

Very simple and easy to use, obviously you will need to select your preferred output folder and PAL or NTSC settings, which you can always change again at a later date if you wanted to say for arguments sake convert a movie to send to the States (USA or Canada).

Possibly not the one of the quickest but very good and reliable.

1. Just select the "FIRST" Vob (or IFO) file (for me the IFO never seems to work, so I chose the VOB option).
2. Select the output folder and name the saved file.

3. Select the size of the file to be created.
3a Predefined, (1 CD = ) (2 CDs = Splits the file into 2 files )
3b Custom, Select 1401, this will create a file larger than 1400MB and keep the best quality, usually around 1.4GB.

4. Select, Add Job.
5. Click Start.

As simple as that.

Go away and have a rest for 2 - 3 hours, but this time obviously depends on your PC spec.

Next

But also make sure you check-out any comments.

APlus didn't work here - wouldn't register correctly which going by the comments seems to have something to do with Firefox being installed. Probably a lucky escape if someone bought that heavily into .net
Title: Re: Free Giveaway of the Day Software
Post by: Floydoid on April 21, 2008, 11:01:34 AM
That's not unusual for GAOTD stuff... btw, I'm now trying Super ©. :)
Title: Re: Free Giveaway of the Day Software
Post by: guest on April 21, 2008, 11:09:06 AM
It wasn't the link back to GAOTD (when you install) which didn't work, it was that the username/serial number simply wouldn't "stick". I had to enter it every time the program started to get it to work and that is apparently "caused" by Firefox being installed. Sounds like nonsense to me but you can't complain about free s/w not working now can you? :)
Title: Re: Free Giveaway of the Day Software
Post by: Floydoid on April 21, 2008, 12:47:43 PM
Well if the problem does involve firefox (though I can't imagine how or why), then:

1) it's a pretty crappy design
2) you are going to pee off quite a sizeable chunk of the online population

Yes of course you can, or at least by leaving them a comment as to what was wrong.

I believe the motive behind giving away these software packages is to be able to receive customer feedback and experiences.

... btw, I'm now trying Super ©. :)

But did you try AutoGK yet ?

Mr Chris also recommended Super some time back so I tried it then, but unless I find that post/thread I can't remember what my comments were, except I did not like it.
http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php?topic=368.msg11275#msg11275

The one thing "I just remembered" about AutoGK is "the first time you use it", look on your Taskbar for
(I think it was) VobSub and select run/OK.

Other than that For AutoGK:
1. Select the first movie Vob
2. Select storage folder.
3. Select Convert.
That's it.

This looks like it could be a good diagnostic tool to try:

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/returnil-virtual-system-premium-edition/

Quote
The Returnil Virtual System Premium Edition is a powerful virtualization technology that completely mirrors your actual computer setup and it can create a virtual storage disk within your PC where you can save documents, data, and files while using the System Protection feature.

Returnil virtualization technology clones a computer’s System Partition and boots the PC into this system rather than native Windows, allowing you run your applications in a completely isolated environment. Hence the session and all activity, malicious or otherwise, will happen in the virtual environment, not in the real PC environment. If the PC is attacked or gets infected, all you need to do is to simply reboot the PC to erase all changes. After reboot, the system will be restored to its original state, as if nothing ever happened. All of this without sacrificing computer performance or usability while helping to reduce technical support intervention and the need for routine maintenance.

This software is great text conversion software. It allows to easily convert from text to hex, hex to text, binary to text, text to binary, and ascii to text or text to ascii, urlencoding/decoding and base64, octal to text and more!

Plus you can select a number of files to process automatically in batch (batch text conversion), and specify a default filename extension, or simply input some text into a text box and convert that way.

Steph there seems to be a crowd on GAOTD who vote software down whatever it is.... in my experience if something gets more than 50% then it's probably worth trying... not that I take much notice of the ratings.

[edit]
I see what you mean on this one... 27% is not good

I nabbed a copy of it - thanks Floydy :)

I certainly wouldnt pay $50 for it - and agree with the comments about it being described as an encryption program..  but the conversion tool for text to hex etc and back again could be very useful and thats why I downloaded it.

I think comment number 7 kinda summed it up for me.
The average user would never ever probably find a use for it (aside from perhaps generating a wireless key).

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/coding-ftp/

Quote
CodingFTP does is very simple: Help you to perform FTP operations automatically and flexibly. Drag & drop is a useful function, but it’s really tedious if you need to do this hundreds of times a day. With Coding FTP, you can easily repeat all the operations you want, e.g. upload/download files, change file dates, change file permissions, delete file/folders, etc. And you can easily do all this by creating a simple script. Then, all you need to do is a simple button click.

Maybe you don’t want to click a button? No problem! You can use any scheduler, e.g. Windows Task Scheduler, to automate the script. Now, you can focus on your work and let Coding FTP upload/download/delete files for you automatically.

Besides, Coding FTP also has an easy and powerful script languages, you can easily control the script to do what you wanted.

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/premium-booster-28/#comments

*****************************************
Edit:
One word of warning and that is if you hit the "Web update" button it then downloads and installs a newer version, so even if you carefully copied the licence key (for future use) it does not recognise that license key in the newer version and reverts back to a 21 day trial program with limited capabilities.

Well I just tried it and it doesn't seem to of had any detrimental effects on my PC.
I also activated "well just about everything" BB/ADSL booster etc, (actually there is quite a lot of possible quick-fix items)

It did a good job with cleaning and defraging the registry, as I recognised quite a few items that I know related to files that I had previously removed.

But obviously only time will tell.

********************************
Edit
Uninstalled the now new 21 day trial version and re-installed from the original DL without any problems.
Although this time I have also not selected the auto-update feature, just in case.

and so far it's rated very highly:

But, take a look at comment number 79.
It appears (if true) that comments may be being removed if they don't fall into the correct ethos of what they want us to read.

"Just of to install it now and give it a try" (I'll be back)

************************
edit
Installed and ran okay.
I chose to blend/fill in the centre part of a CD cover, the results were pretty good but a bit slow, so a lot of patience is needed.
The second attempt was just to remove a "small" amount of text from a DVD cover, this did it in the blink of an eye.

So, I think I will keep it, although how often it will get used is obviously too early to say, but well worth trying for yourself.

Tip:
There is NO obvious way to revert/undo any changes, but by closing just the picture with the small black X (underneath the main red X) this will in effect create a undo last action.

I don't know what hardware prices are like over there, but I would be looking at around 30-50 quid to replace the graphics card.
Title: Re: Free Giveaway of the Day Software
Post by: mr_chris on May 25, 2008, 01:28:50 AM
If you are going to buy one... make sure your PC has a slot for it. A lot of especially budget PCs have the graphics built onto the motherboard, and annoyingly no upgrade slot for them.

If you don't have an AGP or a PCI Express slot, a normal PCI graphics card won't really be of much benefit to you, and would IMO be a bit of a waste of money.

AGP and PCI Express are both types of graphics card slot (technically PCI Express can be used for other things)
Normal PCI is generally too slow for any useful modern graphics processing.

If nothing else on your PC seems sluggish or broken, I would be tempted to leave it. It's usually games that require decent graphics, and from what I saw of that software, yeah it looks ok, but it would have to be worth the cost of the upgrade to you, if you know what I mean.

Thanks Floydy  .......

and ........Thank you Chris  ....    I am leaving well alone ...  I bought my set up from a local specialist here, she built it to my requirements, but it is now; I suppose;  ancient at 3 years old  ::)  I agree with you that it rather negates the offer of a free programme to have to fork out for a new graphics card  which  I'm not sure I'd need for anything else.     My  'masculine' gene must have taken over on this occasion     :D   now had been a pair of shoes !!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for passing this on to us Floydoid.  It looks quite useful.  I've downloaded it and will try it out on one or two things over the next few days.

@scottiesmum - I assume the minmal MB usage on your recording is because of the compression of the audio (ie you haven't got the full range and richness of the sound so it doesn't use up as much space - MP3 reduces the sound quality quite considerably but you just don't notice it on "beat-type" music).  The CD capacity is measure in MB not in time - time is there only as a guide (like saying a photo is about 1MB but it actually depends on the photo content and the megapixels the camera uses).  You should therefore be able to get quite a lot on a CD by the sound of it!
Title: Re: Free Giveaway of the Day Software
Post by: Floydoid on June 23, 2008, 04:56:52 PM
Kate, the 80 mins thing is only relevant when talking about regular (uncompressed) audio CD's - not when storing compressed audio formats such as MP3.

At about 1 MB per minute of music for mp3, a single CD can hold about 700 minutes (or just over 11 hrs) of music in MP3 format.

1. .... but does the same time ratio apply to the spoken word

2. ... I have a feeling this us one of those questions that will go into the annals of 'stupid questions'

1. If by the "spoken word" you mean, what you hear when it's being played then the answer is "no, not necessarily"
A "normal" Audio CD will hold 70/80 or 90 minutes of audio/music (depending on the size of disc being used) the actual size of the file/s (MB) is not taken into consideration and is therefore irrelevant.
This type of disc is burnt as a Audio Disc" that you would play in any standard/normal CD player.

However, a "Data Disc" is the opposite, and it's the total amount of MB's that is counted and not the length of the track/s.
Although a Data disc can be used to store MP3 files, a MP3 player or computer is needed to select and replay the files and not a ordinary CD player.
(All and any file that you see in the likes of My Computer/Explorer and copied directly to a CD or DVD are classed as "Data" files)

IE:
Audio Disc =  20 off 6MB MP3/Wav files of 4 minutes = 80 minutes
Data Disc = 175 off 6MB MP3/Wav files of 4 minutes = 696 MB (approx)
(Data files consist of any type of file including Word, Excel not just MP3/Wav files)

2. No more so than many other question that seem hard to grasp.

Warning - while you were typing a new reply has been posted. You may wish to review your post.

Floydy,
Thanks for pointing that one out.
Looked at it and it is not really much use to me in the type of quizzes that I set up.
It would take me longer than the time I spend at present setting up the pub quizzes.
I have a regular supply of about 30 questions every week from a quiz web site which I then filter out the ones that I can use. I must point out that it is a two way thing as I regularly upload sheets of my quizzes too!
The rest of the questions I just spend a little time researching.
Love doing the picture ones especially for the pub as I know the age groups of the 'teams'.

K,
You are like me regarding Mobile phones, use mine to send ten texts a week that's all. I send ten barcode numbers each week and every Saturday the postie brings me anenvelope with a nice £10 note in it.

I got the program because I like to download some of the Youtube videos instead of keeping the urls in a list and having to find them and go to the site if I want to show someone a funny vid. It is better than the one I had because with the old one I had to download and the run it again to convert to what format I wanted.

Wouldn't know an Ipod or these other tinny screeching things if I saw one.

Damn, missed that one - typical - one that actually looked really worthwhile from the description too :(

Teach me to stay up too late after working Friday night, then sleep all day Saturday and get up just in time to get myself ready for another gig Saturday night!! Rock n Roll ;)

I've always got a niggle in the back of my mind with software from there - I'm not sure if I want to become too reliant on the apps I get from there, because when I end up reformatting my PC at some point, I won't be able to reinstall that software again.

Or maybe that's just sour grapes because I keep missing the decent apps! Please continue to point any good ones out to us Floydy - I keep forgetting about the site and only look when prompted by a post from you in here!!

Another (similar) one for you geeky types today:

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/gridinsoft-notepad-33/

Text editor is considered to be the basic instrument for every software developer. Convenient location of panels, menu, and vast tools for working with text, as well as the possibilities of flexible integration with compilers - everything is of great importance. The balance of possibilities, easiness of perception and usability are usually given considerable prominence to.

Do you really need an editor with 100 menu entries and which takes 2 minutes to download? The answer is evident – no! That is why GridinSoft has developed a completely unique editor: you can appreciate its convenience and load performance from the very first minutes of working with it. Template patterns, folding, integration with SVN, the possibilities of flexible functionality extension at the expense of the script language based on popular JavaScript!

The list of features is not exhaustive – it will take much time to enlist, but in the process of working with GridinSoft Notepad you will open up more and more ways of enhancing your productive capacity! What about a built-in syntactic calculator of expressions, spelling check, or a web-analyzer which can check compliance of your code to a variety of standards of the HTML syntax?

We believe that our editor is worth trying out! Being a team of software developers, we use the GridinSoft Notepad on a permanent basis ourselves. That is why we can easily recommend it to you as well!

One for the security fanatics to try out today: http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/a-squared-anti-malware-35/

Quote
a-squared Anti-Malware keeps your computer free from Trojans, Spyware, Adware, Worms, Keyloggers, Rootkits, Dialers and other malicious programs. There are many anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-dialer software products but only a few of them can claim to provide effective protection from all types of Malware. The main reason for this is the eternal cat and mouse game played for decades between Malware programmers and the security industry.

Normal security software is limited by the fact that it can only recognize Malware for which the manufacturer has already created a signature - assuming that the manufacture even has a copy of the Malware available for analysis.

Emsi Software has now turned the tables and no longer trails behind the Malware authors. a-squared Anti-Malware does not identify damaging software purely on the basis of signatures, but also looks at how it behaves. This means that you will be protected from the hundreds of new Trojans, Worms, Dialers, Rootkits and Spyware that appear every day.

NB: This download includes full technical support and updates for 1 year.

This looks so much more user interface friendly and is ideal for anyone doing projects etc.

Today we have Driver Magician 3.32, which looks like it could be an extremely useful back-up tool:

http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/driver-magician-332/

Quote
Driver Magician offers a professional solution for device drivers backup, restoration and update in Windows operating system. It identifies all the hardware in the system, extracts their associated drivers from the hard disk and backs them up to a location of your choice. Then when you format and reinstall/upgrade your operating system, you can restore all the “saved” drivers just as if you had the original driver diskettes in your hands. After one system reboot, your PC will be loaded and running with the required hardware drivers.

Driver Magician has a built in database of the latest drivers with the ability to go to the Internet to receive the driver updates. It saves lots of time to find the correct drivers and mature drivers will obviously increase the performance of hardware. If there are unknown devices in your PC, Driver Magician helps you to detect them easily and quickly with its built in hardware identifier database.
Key features

    * Back up device drivers of your computer in four modes.
    * Restore device drivers from backup in one mouse click.
    * Update device drivers of your PC to improve system performance and stability.
    * Live Update device identifier database and driver update database.
    * Detect unknown devices.
    * Get detailed information of the hardware drivers.
    * Clone all drivers to an auto-setup package (.EXE), so you can restore drivers without installing Driver Magician.

Yes I thought that too so I downloaded it. Sadly the comments are right - a few tests with a hard drive, memory stick, SD card and CF card convinced me that its a waste of disk space.

Basically if your disk is NTFS formatted then it'll recover files which have just been deleted, but if you've defragged the disk (for example) then you're probably out of luck. If your disk is FAT formatted then it does a little better but I have no idea why the first thing it asks is if the disk has been reformatted as it simply can't find any files if it has, regardless of whether its NTFS or FAT.

It looked quite nice though :)

Kitz, not to worry, the alternative had a "very basic" GUI but also worked well.

Although it worked well, except after disabling/removing the programs from the startup option that I had set to open at specific times, I had to reset the "Start with windows" in their own settings.
Not a big deal, but just a heads-up.

try using ESET Instead, - smaller faster - less resources, and a better support system (though that is my opinion.)
