So, hi.
Personal life: nearly middle-aged, nearly a gin addict, nearly sane.
Professional life: Have worked for Easynet/Sky Network Services and ntl in the past, alongside other networking related goodness. Currently working in network optimization and software defined networking.
Had one of the first ADSL 2+ Annex M lines in the country.
Lead broadband campaign in the local area quite successfully.
Currently studying for an MSc, and once I've done this year's exams will be onto study for Juniper Networks certifications.
Very keen on getting higher bandwidth services than are available via FTTC at this time, alongside a resilient service as I am home worker, and occasionally need pretty large files yesterday.
And that's what I do when I'm not posting on forums like I own them.

b*cat raises and waves a furry black paw in greeting. :)

. . . gin . . .

. . . Juniper . . .

I do believe that there is a connection between the former and the latter! :D

Hi Ignition
- She says having known you on various from forums for what must be what 10 years since your days at Easynet?
Thanks for the intro and giving us a 'lil bit more about you.
Seems a bit silly for me to say welcome now, as I'm sure I've already been there and done it :D
nearly sane? You should fit right in around here ;)
lol @ the juniper & gin association from the black cat. :D

I have cats called Oxley, Hendrick, Tanqueray and Juniper ;)

No wonder William suspected this is a cat forum.
Beginning to wonder myself now if there may well be a link between cat owner and DSL freaks. :D
-
For many of us, I suspect our first encounter with technology was the 'cat's whisker'.

It was for me when my dad who built he own TV, Radio's amps etc got me a Cat's whisker Crystal set .
@ kitz we had two cats some years ago.
Hi and welcome.

Have you considered multiple FTTC lines IP-bonded together to get more speed? Works beautifully well for me (though only miserable 2.5 Mbps ADSL2).
-
So I'm not really a DSL freak, more of a cable guy with a passing interest.

I have used load balancing on 2 VDSL lines. I gave one of them up as Openreach ran out of capacity and it seemed unfair to take 2 ports while others had none.

I'm going to update this a little bit with a couple of slide decks I made last year for the wonderful folks at NetMcr to give some insight into what I do for a living.
I'm easy enough to find online but for the curious - https://www.linkedin.com/in/cthomas/

Yes, I can be a bit of a numpty at times and for that I apologise - please let me know if I'm going too far. Comes with the territory of being an IT guy under extraordinary levels of pressure, getting relatively little time off as we're in a very busy period and being prone to ranting.

Thanks Carl for the linkies. Interesting to read a tiny bit about networking at the application layer as well as the slide about cable networks. Most people tend to think of networking = hardware.
Congrats on the new job :)

I admit, my eyes glaze over when I read anything about SD-WAN its so far beyond my comprehension.

What Alex said. ;) :)
