Title: 2003 Word file association
Post by: tonyappuk on November 02, 2015, 10:59:40 PM
Probably all the brains on here know this wrinkle already but I thought it was worth mentioning. I have a new 64 bit Win 7 installation with Office 2003. Recently I found that double clicking .doc files in Explorer had stopped opening the file in Word, just the rotating waiting symbol for ever. After much Googling and Binging and reading MS information sheets (which didn't help) I found the problem. Because it is 64 bit and the Office Suite is 32 bit, Office is in the Prog Files (x86) folder. Somehow the association had been switched to the 64 bit Prog Files but if you try to change it "normally" it still insists in looking in the wrong folder. You can change it by right clicking on a doc file, going to properties and using "browse" to find the correct Winword.exe file and making that the default association. There are probably other ways of doing it too. Hope it saves someone a frustrating few hours and I don't even know why or how it happened!
