Title: Faulty ADSL V1.0 faceplate?
Post by: fozymoss on October 27, 2011, 06:40:07 PM
I have had a new phone line installed by BT about a month ago.  They fitted a new socket with an ADSL V1.0 faceplate which makes it much easier to plug router straight into the line rather than having filters dangling everywhere.

The broadband has never worked since it was installed and Kky are still working on that (the most recent idea is that the router is faulty - sigh).  However I now seem to have a problem with the faceplate.

My phone had no dialling tone.  When plugged into the test socket dialling tone was restored.  Then reassemble the faceplate and phone has dialling tone for a while but then disappears again.  When plugged into faceplate and jiggling phone plug there is lots of noise even when there is no dialling tone.

Tisi sounds to me as if there is a fault with the faceplate.  Am I making the right diagnosis?

If so I am going to have to get BT to replace it as Sky (my provider who have arranged everything so far) refuse to accept any responsibility as its on the consumer side, despite the fact they arranged BT to put it in and its only been in just over a month.

Thanks for any advice offered.

It sounds as though the faceplate plug isn't making good contact with the test socket when the faceplate is fixed in place, but it could just be something making bad contact inside the faceplate. Either way, replacing it would be the first thing I would do. It was fitted by BT Openreach, and you can't officially contact them directly, so you need to badger Sky to insist on a replacement.

Thanks roseway - I didn't realise that I couldn't contact Openreach direct - it looks like another 40 minutes on the phone to Sky again - I haven't so far managed to get them to accept responsibility but your reply gives me the confidence (and bloody mindedness) to try again.

thanks for your help

Hi FM,

It might be worth examining the whole assembly carefully. Very occasionally I've seen the faceplate chassis (i.e. the rear section of the plate) become distorted if the back box or the plaster is crooked or uneven so the chassis can't fit nicely flush to the surface. Sometimes slacking the two fixing screws off a little allows the chassis to recover. Similarly you don't need a torque wrench when replacing the removable part of the faceplate.

Kind regards,
Walter

My BT Broadband went down yesterday. My solution was to remove the ADSL v1.0 face plate and use a filter via the revealed phone socket. This worked. My guess is that the filter in the faceplate has either failed or is in need of an update. This is only a guess - I am reading that there may be improved faceplates.

I did have a faulty batch of the face plates once. I got about 6 in a row from the same box. So it could be a faulty front plate to begin with.

Walter makes a really good point about distorted nte's. Overtightened screws in pattresses, Particuarly if the pattress is very deep within the wall.

The other thing that can cause this is heavy dampness in the surrounding plaster. Not too bad if the nte is mounted in a back box on the wall. But if in a metal pattress within the wall, this can be a issue.

Just the damp air caused by the water content of very wet plaster will cause all sorts of issues. If there was fresh wet plaster where the NTE was to be installed then I would leave the nte temproraraly hanging there and not screw it to the pattress as give it a few min's you can get HR issues such as a constant bell ring.

I replaced my faceplate with a new one from Amazon which looked very similar but no longer with a small green circuit board visible. It is working fine. I assume that it is a higher specification than the the one it replaced. They both have V1.0 on the front so that is not very helpful. My guess is that my higher broadband speeds require improved filters. Its only a guess - but I'm delighted with the outcome.

I very much doubt that there is any change in the circuitry or the individual components' specification, it is more likely that you are looking at a product of a different manufacturing plant.

The important result is that everything is back to normal and you are pleased with the outcome.

Thank you for letting us know.  :)
