I RECOMMEND TRYING / USING PCLinuxOS (www.pclinuxos.com) instead of windows,  Yes its Linux but don\'t let that put you off (which it has me for years) >It\'s more like a windows set-up nowadays.< >It\'s great,It\'s even greater because it is FREE.   Michael

Yes it is. I just tried it. There was probably a temporary service problem when you tried.

Jack, do you have auto login enabled for the PlusNet portal by any chance? This can often cause problems when you first request a page from there for the first time. It might be the same with files that are hosted there.

Try it once, then try it again and it may work for you.

Or it might just have been a portal glitch like roseway said... I think PN did some portal work last night so perhaps that's why it wasn't there when you tried?

It is normally good practice to leave most modems on at all times.

One possible exception is if you know you always get a lot of radio frequency noise at a particular time of day.
In that circumstance some people do turn the modem off for the nasty period to stop the modem re-training at a much lower sync speed.

On no account keep turning it off and on again in a short space of time.

Kind regards,
Walter

So you if decided to turn off the router at say 11pm at night and on at 8am in the morning that would be OK Huh?Huh??

Why does that training video say turn it off for 15 mins everyday during the 10 day training period ?

Hi again FG,

Noting that there is usually a higher level of radio frequency noise overnight, I would try to leave the modem off until say 10:00 or 11:00 a.m. so that you are well into the optimum noise period. It does depend upon location so it would be worth leaving the modem on for a few days and observing how the noise levels change over time. One of the very bad lines in Ewhurst always seems best between 14:00 and 16:00.

I have no idea why BT suggest the 15 minute rest but perhaps Kitz might know ?
I don't know of any other ISP suggesting that, even those using BT W's ADSL Max services.

If you've looked at the BT Video you will note that they still talk of line length as a reason for reduced speed but fail to mention that line quality is also important; this can be affected by all sorts of cable "features" if not cable faults including degraded aluminium.

Kind regards,
Walter

Thanks for that.

Well my new internet started on Monday so I'm on the third day of the 10 day training period and so far the line is very stable although admittedly not very fast.
I reckon my line is about 8km long so getting a reliable connection at any speed is a plus.

I did a speedtest at speedtest.net and then a ping test there  and it said my line was B quality  which surprised me as I thought it would be much worse.

But I'll wait the 10 days and see how it goes.    clap

If you change provider after a while  to a new one does the 10 day training period start again ?

Compared to the results we get here that's little short of a miracle ! BT are to be congratulated upon have an area with good cabling.

It would be interesting to see your modem stats if possible.

The stats will have to be another day I'm afraid.

The broadband is down.

I switched off the router for an hour at lunchtime whilst I moved some furniture and now all I get is a blinking light on the 2 Wire  2700 broadband light.

It can't establish a connection.  I've tried a different router and leads and plugged directly into the test socket.

Same thing happened on Monday the first day I had it officially activated but it did eventually go to a continuous light and work.

And the day after they put in the new tel line the guy came back saying there was a fault showing on the exchange comp.
Asked me to take out my phone wait a day and connect a different phone.

You see it's always the customers equipment at fault never Openreach.

I've contacted the ISP  today who are putting in a fault report with Openreach same as I did not Monday before the fault righted itself and I established a connection.

Am back to the dongle........oh dear.       Sad

I shouldn't have listened to that woman on the video with her switch off for 15 mins everyday........ Angry

Hi FG,

I'm sorry to hear your line has dropped. If you haven't already done so I suggest getting a 0.5 m screened RJ11 modem cable and just leave the 2Wire grinding away.
Disabling the WiFi might just help as well.
As it has made a connection it will probably do so again within 24 hours, although I doubt if you'll be lucky this evening after sunset.

Kind regards,
Walter
