Hi , I hope this is an appropiate question for this forum (if not -> bin it).Aol supplied a Thomson Speedtouch576 wirless router/modem ,all is ok (stats at bottom of this post) .The only problem is I can't connect to any dedicated server on line (eg EA etc.) using Xbox .I get the message "server not available try again later".
Ok, here we go-- Aol suggest the router is "old" and there is a problem with the ports?
A firmware update is required from Thomson...Thomson say any problem please refer to Aol?I cannot find any mention of an upgrade anywhere.I'm stuck with Aol till august this year..does anyone know of a specific problem with this router or is it just set up incorrectly?
ps Xbox live is fine using this router it's just dedicated servers I cannot connect to whatsoever?

thanks, Sad
 Regards,

Thank you jefbb for your reply, I have never been able to access online games severs using the Xbox..everything else is great...
However after a screaming match with Aol yesterday  I have this morning recieved my MAC ,and done a "deal"with them to pay a small portion of the remaining contract(~8 months)...because of the amount of hassle I have had over the years.
Some you win,some you lose!
Everybody around here can access all servers without a problem it's only Aol that cannot, anyway thanks for your help and to any other Aol users who are not happy ..BE FIRM and you never know(in the end the guy was quite nice about it all!)
Regards.

I am a little confused though about the fact you are able to connect to xbox live but not to certain servers..... As i know myself having the xbox you don't get to choose your servers as there is servers dedicated to each game you play unlike certain PC games you get to choose a string of servers and there locations that you wish to connect to. If you are able to connect to xbox live then that would indicate there isn't anything wrong with your network settings on the xbox as they should be using DHCP. There is 1 thing that could be wrong with it and that could be your NAT (Network address translation) settings for the xbox. I am only stating this as i am talking from experience. Are you using a static IP address for your xbox? If you are i would suggest you run a connection test on the xbox which will tell you wither your NAT is strict or open. If your NAT is strict then you won't beable to connect to any games you play but you will beable to connect to the xbox live. If it turns out that your NAT is open then the only thing i would suggest it is is the router itself so if you where to get a spare router (different model) and test that you might find it will work i would recommend a netgear. This is just something for future reference and it is worth checking this cause moving to another SP may not be the fix for you. Have you also tried to port forward on your router to open the ports?

Good luck
Gary

I'd also check to make sure the ports have been forwarded correctly.

That is also a fairly slow speed you have there. 5.3Mb with an attenuation of 38Db and a noise margin of 16Db there is def room for more speed there not unless your on a fixed rate with AOL. If you have already moved make sure your getting the full benifit of your speed that your line can handle.
