Hi I am with BT
I live a long way from the exchange but despite them saying I can only get half a MB I have since joining BT mostly enjoyed around 1 MB. However over the past few months and since they came out to me in October had nearly 2 MB... But it's the same old story every few months the speeds drop again a little at a time until the line keeps cutting off. When I ring BT I have to go through the usual rigmarole of testing all my equipment usually half a dozen times. Until they finally locate the fault. It is always the same though they tell me I was lucky to have getting those speeds as the line does not support it. BUT IT DOES it has been proved. My neighbour  has had no end of problems for the past few months and even threatened to cancel his contract with them now low and behold my speeds have dropped to 653kb. Not sure if his have improved yet of not.

What really frustrates me is that a person who has a small business up the road got so fed up paid for fibre optic to be installed from the exchange to his house. Why can't they install it just a few hundred feet further to us.

How can I explain to them that I am fed up with my speeds dropping and dropping before it keeps cutting of again and can you suggest anything that might make my life easier.

I am not too sure about the underlined  figures where they come from . see my view of BT test attached
With the dsl connection rate of 1440 your profile should go to 1250Kbps within a few days as long as your line keeps this synch rate .Your profile must have been generated by some synch at ~1000Kbps . maybe its stuck ?

It's the IP profile which is limiting your download speed. This indicates that at some time recently you must have had a lower speed connection than you currently have. This isn't at all unusual with such a long line, and keeping your connection running at the higher speed is likely to be a bit hit and miss.

In the first instance, can you hear any crackling or hiss on the phone? If so, check that you still hear it with a corded phone, and everything else disconnected from the line. If you still hear it, then report it to your phone provider (dial 151 if it's BT) and report it as a voice fault; don't mention broadband.

If there's no audible noise, then the next thing to do is to make sure that your own internal setup is as good as it can be. There's a lot of information about that on the troubleshooting page and other linked pages.

To get more information about the state of your connection, you could install Routerstats Lite (scroll down the page to see it) which should be compatible with your home hub. This will monitor the noise margin and show the result as a graph which can help to diagnose problems.

Hi there,

Thanks for your replies,  no hissing on the line, sorry a bit computer illiterate here, please bare with me am I to understand that my speeds could go up in the next few days. I do know a BT engineer has been out this morning to my neighbours house and said that his line has been capped to stabilise it and would look into the matter. Could you tell me if the amount of people having Broadband in the the village( a tiny hamlet) really would  make our speeds slower.

No hissing on the line or crackling, done all the checks nothing is interfering  with my equipment from inside the house.

Yes, if your connection speed holds up at its present level then your IP profile, and hence your download speed, should increase within a few days.
