Issues with my ADSL connection.

Hi,

I am interested in increasing the speed of my net connection, so I looked at my connection speed and did some speed tests on various websites. Now as you can see in the pic below my net is connected at 2200kbps, but on speed tests I never see over 1000! Does anyone know why this would be?

Some other bits of info too, my master socket is a BT NTE5. I am using a V1 BT Home Hub. My exchange (EMLGHBO) is approx 4.5km by road too. The router is not connected directly to the master socket but is a spur off the master socket with only that being fed.

So does anyone have any ideas why there is such a difference with the speed my router says compared to what actual speed I get?

Hi and welcome.

There are several possible reasons why your actual download speeds are a lot lower than your connection speed:-

- ISP traffic management
- Exchange or ISP congestion
- Limited by your IP profile

Your connection speed is very good for your long line (the reported attenuation of 63.5 dB is the highest value the router will report, so it could be even higher). The first thing to check is your IP profile, so go to http://speedtester.bt.com/ and run the BT speed test, which will inform you of your IP profile. If it's only 1000 kbps, then that is what is limiting your speed, otherwise it's one of the other factors.

It could also be a limitation inside the PC, though less likely at that speed TBH - e.g. MTU/RWIN?

Would I still get these problems when off peak as I have checked at 6am before when it should be quiet to see if it was any different and it wasn't. Here are my results from the speedtester, does this help at all determine the IP profile?



What do you mean limitation of the pc? If it helps my pc is plenty powerful enough to cope with it.

Hi Satrix,

As nobody else seems to be around, I will mention that this type of BT Speedtest output usually happens when you have a fixed speed set, rather than being rate-adaptive.

I've attached an older-type picture of one of the poor connections I'm dealing with for comparison.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I had a sneaking suspicion it was. I know BT has fiddled with our line before when trying to get BT Vision to work on it. I bet they have set it to a 1mb line (this will be going back to 2006 time) when if I remember correctly we use to get slower sync's. Looks like I need to ring up BT then and ask whether it can be put onto rate adaptive to see if we can get any extra speed. Thanks for the help.
