Hi,

I've just bought a new ST546 v6. It performs much better than my Belkin type N.

I've been trying to downgrade to 6.1.0.5 to use the SNR changer with DMT.

However it seems to refuse to load any firmware on it that is below the version number it came with.

I have tried many different .bin files, both more and less recent and different types of each version. I have tried different update program versions. I have set it as a static IP and all that. Post 6.2 works everytime. Pre 6.2 fails everytime.

Whatever I do I cannot downgrade. It sends the file over and attempts to install it, but whenever it reboots at the end of the process it just fails to load.

I was sold this modem by the LLU ISP I am moving over to, as they said that it would be better on my long line (it is), but also that unlike 21CN which I'm currently on, the SNR is set and they can only request changes in lots of 3dB, where as I could fine tune it by 1dB myself with 6.1.0.5 and DMT.

Can anyone offer any suggestions please? If not, be aware that new SpeedTouch modems seem to be locked in this way, if that is not known.

Cheers

If its got the LLU F/W on it, update that first then downgrade it.

Thanks, but it started with a generic firmware and has been up then downgraded many times without success. Sad

Well I've finally managed a downgrade, but only to 6.1.9.6, which I'd ignored, as it was stated that 6.1.0.5 or earlier were needed for fully using DMT with a 546.

Although the performance and line quality graphs aren't displaying anything, it will allow the enabling of the SNR options and they take effect.

Testing it on 21CN at the moment as I don't move to C&W LLU til later this week.

At 6.5dB I've gone from 3.25mb (Belkin type N) to 3.75mb (ST546 v6.2 and v7.4) to 4mb (ST546 v6.1). These are all actual speeds not connection ones.

A quick test at 4.5dB is showing nearly 4.5mb. I'm not happy with changes to latency though, so I need to play about with it and test error rates and other things.

Also, is there any major reason I should be on 7.4 over 6.1?

Thanks

EDIT: After all that messing about I think the default 6.5dB is best all round Smiley Am I best staying with this firmware? Will it possibly still be of use to change SNR when I move over to LLU soon? Will I miss the great sounds DMT makes even though I can't get it to show pleasing graphs as well?
