Hi,

Is anyone able to detirmine why my upload speed is so poor, and what can be done.
I enclose information other folk have asked for.

ADSL Line Status OPERATIONAL
ADSL Standard G.dmt
UpStream 448 kb (FastPath)
DownStream 8128 kb (FastPath)
Attenuation Near End: 22.5
Far End: 13.0
SNR Margin Near End: 8
Far End: 16
HEC Count 599
Firmware 0x41e2be2c
15 min ES Counter 1
CRC Errors 9608
1 day ES Counter 2877

Tweakable settings:
RWIN: 34032
Window scaling: YES (scaling factor: 2^0> 12:16:25.892117 IP (tos 0x0)
PMTUD: YES
Time stamping: YES
SACKS: YES
MSS requested: 1430
TTL remaining: 50

Results of download test:
Data bytes we sent: 271412 bytes
Data packets we sent: 193
Retransmitted data packets: 0
Transfer efficiency: 100%
Max packet size you sent (MTU): 1458
Max packet size you received (MTU): 1458
Data transmit time: 0.249 seconds
Maximum idle time: 22.5 milliseconds
Transfer rate: 981893 bytes/sec (958.9 kilobytes/sec)

Ping test:
72.14.192.10 : xmt/rcv/%loss = 10/10/0%, min/avg/max = 17.6/18.2/18.7

NEW! Suggestions based on these results

This bit is under development, please ignore all the suggestions below for the time being :-)

Your RWIN is a multiple of your MSS
No retransmits, good connection
Path MTU discovery is enabled

Your chosen RWIN value will limit your throughput to:
25094 kb/s (3136.7 kB/s) to UK sites (assuming 20ms RTT)
5576 kb/s (697.0 kB/s) to US (East Coast) sites (assuming 90ms RTT)
3346 kb/s (418.2 kB/s) to US (West Coast) sites (assuming 150ms RTT)
2281 kb/s (285.2 kB/s) to Japanese sites (assuming 220ms RTT)

I've ascertained that as far as I can I am virus\nasty free, if that is of some use.

Hi

Thanks for all the info.. but what are your speeds?

Hello kitz,

Yes, sorry about that, I have asked for advise on another forum, and one of the requests was for those links.

All my speed tests indicate between 3\4 megs down, and without exception record anything from 7 up to approx 90kbps up.

 I sync at:
Up......448kb
Down..7968

Result of test at adsl

Test at adsl similar to all others.
Downstream: 3993.43 Kbps (3.90 Mbps)
Upstream: 36.67 Kbps (0.04 Mbps)
Test complete.

Thank you for your reply.

Hi

Although maxdsl is rate adaptive I certainly wouldnt expect your upstream to deteriorate so much :/

I notice you have looked at MTU and if you want to try tweaking some more, I'm currently finding that MTU 1430 RWIN 166800 is giving me good results with maxdsl.

Details how to tweak.
Although it may help its doubtful that this will cure your problems tbh.

----

The first thing that normally strikes me when someone says they are having upstream problems is malware of some sort. Also check that its not your firewall blocking upstream.

Im aware youve already checked your system...
but if I were you something I would try so that you can eliminate that nothing else is using your upstream is grab yourself a copy of Netmeter.
Install it and then making sure all other PCs on the network are off firstly see if anything is using the upstream whilst your PC is on but idle.
Then try sending a file to a friend and see what speeds it records.

I notice you have a quite a few errors on your router stats.  how far into maxdsl are you so far?
Have you passed your 10 day training period yet?

What is your latency like do you see any packet loss?
Details how to do a tracert.

Failing all that..  I would contact my ISP and request that they pass this fault over to BTw for investigation.  Give your ISP a list of the things that you have tried yourself and make sure that you stress it is an UPSTREAM problem

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

Thank you again.

I regraded back to 2megs but that didn't help.

Hi gesail

Upstream problems are normally pretty few and far between, and Im sorry that it seems like neither your ISP nor BT have been able to help with this problem.

Out of curiosity what speeds are you syncing at now.. and what is your  throughput?

Did you try getting hold of something like DUMeter or NetMeter to monitor your actual upstream throughput?

Hello Kitz, and thank you for your reply.

I sync @ 2272 down 288 up, so no problem there. I have monitered upstream throughput via Netmeter and figures tally with reduced upstream.

If you pay a visit to Freedom2Support, there are fellow sufferers also complaining.

Because of F2Ss terrible CS (Up to 2hours on hold) I have toyed with the idea of migrating, but whether anyone else could solve this problem is anyones guess.

Thank you again,

John.

Hi..

I just went and had a look on F2Support, and was quite suprised to see that others are also experiencing this as you say.
http://www.freedom2support.net/forums/showthread.php?t=6851

Could it be a modem/router issue as has been suggested elsewhere, do you have the option of trying out another modem just to eliminate the possibility?

I have heard that F2S had been having slowdowns on some of their gateways, but it doesnt make sense to see upstream that low.
If it was a gateway issue then you would expect more people to be complaining and it would be worse at peak times when I would also expect the downstream to drop.
You would also expect the problem to clear if you reconnected to a different gateway.

Im sorry that I dont know what else to suggest other than keep badgering F2S and they may eventually realise that something is up.
The more F2S customers that are reporting the same thing, then the more likely they are to actually do something about it.

I do hope you manage to get it sorted soon.

Have you tried any other speed tests apart from ADSLGuide? They can simply give wrong results for some people. There's a known problem with the ADSLGuide speed test, whereby some Linux systems get absurdly low upstream results, such as you are seeing. Try a different tester, or simply use a stopwatch while uploading a big file somewhere.

One good tip is to install something like NetMeter or DUMeter... and watch it when you're uploading a file to your webspace or something.

Actually just noticed Kitz said to try this earlier too Smiley

Getting a second opinion from a different test is never a bad idea - another speedtest that measures upload (and has pretty dials showing your speed too Wink ) is http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/

Let us know!

Just like to add ByteOMeter to that.

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Network-Tools/Network-Monitoring/ByteOMeter.shtml

I like it so much that I've paid for it after a 30 day trial (?9.95)

Hi All,

Just to let you  know that my ISP has now fixed the fault and upload speed back to normal.  I want to say thank you to everyone that responded, it's a lifeline to us non-techies, thank you again.
